We Must Maintain the Pressure
Dear Readers and Supporters,

The Moderators have temporarily seized control of the posts. We mods happen to know some big bills are piling up, and the bank account is very low heading into Christmas, and Jo doesn’t like to ask, but your support keeps this work, research and blog going. Please hit the tip jar, buy Jo and David a beer, a steak, a month on the server ($100), or a mini-break.

The Real IPCC consensus

The Climate Skeptic Movement has had a phenomenal year in 2016, though there is much still to do to slow the trillion dollar juggernaut that takes from the poor and gives to the wealthy. Progress is only happening through the persistent and hard work of prominent skeptics like Jo Nova who’s material is reproduced around the world, who continues to inspire and inform and who takes the brunt of abuse from climate alarmists in politicians and the main stream media.

As you all know Joanne came from a science communication background and once worked with our national publicly funded ABC, the ANU and the National Science and Technology Centre. Jo doesn’t say it on the blog, but asking questions about the ‘accepted’ science created a rift between her and her former colleagues and friends. She stayed true to the science and had the courage to establish this award-winning blog. Unfortunately, contrary to propaganda, Jo is not funded by big oil, coal, or any other fossil fuel interests.

The other half in this extraordinary partnership is Dr David Evans who has sacrificed a comfortable job in government or academia because his work has found inconvenient answers. His work on The Notch-Delay Solar Theory detailed here may well help break through the defences of the UN IPCC’s amateur-hour science when more scientists who are actually skilled in statistical analysis and physics are exposed to it.

Who will ever forget the UK’s leading climate scientist, Dr Phil Jones, head of the UK Climate Research Unit admitting he couldn’t plot a trend using Excel in his Dec 2007 Climategate email? That is what we are dealing with, and once more politicians start demanding answers to the climate skeptics questions, the IPCC will be found wanting. This will only happen if the Climate Skeptic Movement, headed by people like Jo Nova and Dr David Evans, keep raising the questions and reaching the public and main stream media consciousness to prompt the politicians to ask the right questions. We moderators are awed by Joanne and David’s dedication, and what they have been through, to continue this work while trying to pay the bills and raise three lovely young, bright children.

They can’t do it without your help.We know Joanne and David don’t like to ask, but they live frugally and they and their children have missed out on a lifestyle they could have enjoyed had they not ‘bucked’ the system. We are asking you to ensure Joanne and David continue this important fight to stop the waste of trillions of dollars in taxpayer funds and economic opportunity costs. We know some people make regular or occasional contributions, but it isn’t paying the mortgage. Please make a contribution today, no matter how big or small, to theTip Jar’ via Pay Pal or credit card (or located at the top right of the page). There are  non-paypal, non-credit card options .This really shouldn’t be called a ‘Tip Jar’, it is their ‘existence fund’! We hope you believe their existence in the climate debate is as important and valuable as we do.

All the Moderators would like to take this opportunity to thank contributors for your patience and understanding that we Moderators are all volunteers working at the site on an ‘as available’ basis. Fortunately for us, most contributors do follow the rules of the site, and ‘play nice’ with those they may disagree with. We look forward to your continued participation for the rest of 2016 and in the New Year.

May you all have a very safe and happy holidays season and 2017.

Despite the mods being mean to me, and often [snipping] parts of my posts, I have made a small contribution.

I’m trying to be a good boy.. really I am..

… maybe not enough for Santa this year, though. 🙁

Happy Christmas, guys, and a HNY

[When you can see the activity behind the curtain as moderators can, what Jo does every day is even more impressive than is apparent from what she writes for public view. She really does put in long hours to make this blog a success. So, Andy, she and all of us mods do appreciate it when we don’t have to moderate anyone – hint, hint. 😉

However, you can rest assured that Santa Clause will be visiting your house this year.] AZ

Hey I know we arent supposed to post stuff up the top, but this is a bit of a must-see:

          http://www.canberratimes.com.au/federal-politics/political-news/hardleft-faction-forms-inside-greens-aiming-to-end-capitalism-20161222-gtghf9.html

If ever there was any doubt about the Greens and their now hard-left core ( complete with an “Up the Workers” raised fists Socialist logo :

“Internal tensions within the Greens have boiled over, with members of the hard-left of the party grouped around NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon forming their own faction dedicated to the “fight to bring about the end of capitalism”.

The formation of the group calling itself “Left Renewal” is an escalation of an ongoing battle between the so-called eastern bloc of the Greens and the group they dismiss as “tree Tories”.

Candidates backed by the hard-left have lost out in the two most recent state preselections in NSW, with members of the eastern bloc claiming the party has been infiltrated by “those with liberal politics who manipulate party processes [to] solidify their control”.

The emergence of Left Renewal poses a challenge for Greens leader Richard Di Natale as the party has always argued publicly that it has no factions and governs itself and formulates policy on a consensus model of decision-making.”

Think of it a zit that has finally festered to the skin surface I guess…..or a boil….

          61

            Ted O'Brien

This is much more a boil than a zit. So much so that I wouldn’t be sure that it’s purpose isn’t to distract. Even Bob Brown’s call for our No: 1 communist to follow his example could be tactical.

I point out again that the Hawke/Keating government vigorously promoted the crash of 1987. Australia contributed its share to that crash.

When the Marxists failed to gain control in 1987 they switched to running up public debt. Public debt is private capital taken out of private management. Public debt must be funded by private capital by way of taxation.

Marxism has come within an ace of gaining control of our economy. Gillard’s. carbon tax was the last tool they needed tro destroy capitalism. Their initial proposal for an ETS would have done this in two years.

The objectives described here are no different in the overall picture to those of Bill Shorten’s ALP.

              This is tremendous news!

We all knew that The Greens was an eco facade for hard core socialism/Marxism but many of the widespread public bought the story that The Greens are mainly campaigning for the “benefit” of the environment + social “fairness”. Well, this will be a wakeup call that even the MSM cannot ignore. The Greens performed poorly in NSW during the last Federal election, largely because the hard left faction was more apparent than in the other states so this unmasking will help marginalize them even more.

Looking at the comments on that Heath Aston story in the smh on Saturday morning I detect a pronounced shift in the bias.

This, I imagine, would be brought about more by a shift in the moderation of comments rather than a change in the comments entered.

Which I see as very good news.

While as I indicated before I don’t see much difference between Lee Rhiannon’s policies here expressed and those of Richard di Natale and Bill Shorten, this event could be turned into a lancing of the boil if the conservatives pick it up and run with it.

I wish Jo and David and the young’uns a very Merry Christmas. Jo, my chocolate purchase will show up with a Canadian address, so don’t let that confuse you.
This blog is indeed an inspiration. Hope springs eternal.
The election results in the UK and USA are certainly reason to rejoice, but the baddies (as Abbott used to call them) are extremely well resourced and, like the cornered rats they are, have a lot to lose.
I signed up a few months ago to a Linkedin group on Energy, thinking that the discussion would be intelligent and technical, but in fact, for the most part, seems to be a bunch of windmill and solar panel worshipers. That is their right, but contrary opinions (not only mine) are met with name-calling first, then the call to authority, and then derision. The trend we are bucking is well and truly religious in nature.
But enough of that. I wish all of the readers (maybe even Harry) a joyous and peaceful Christmas and sufficient prosperity in the New Year to provide Jo and David with chocolate.

[Yes even Harry 🙂 – Mod]

    To dear Jo and David,
I’ve just purchased some chocolate and I was very very happy to do so. (I’ve tried to do so in the past but couldn’t seem to make the ‘Tip Jar’ system work. So sorry.)

I too join with all the others here in saying how much we sincerely appreciate everything you do for scientific truth and human freedom. I cannot find the words to adequately express my admiration for you both.
In my eyes, you are utterly indispensable; in many ways truly heroic.
Every day you are putting into action what the rest of us feel so strongly about – that something must be done to fight the political totalitarianism creeping into every facet of our lives and corrupting the institutions we hold dear.
Whatever happens, please please please don’t give up the fight!!
We depend on you and we love you.

I’m not religious by any means but I’m quite fond of some of the sentiments to be found in the Bible. One that springs to mind with regard to your work is this: “Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled”
I think that, if there is a God watching us, He would be very pleased by your work and the sacrifices the two of you have made for all of our sakes. And I’m still innocent and naive enough to think that goodness will not go unrewarded.

May your Christmas be a safe and happy one for all the family.

After reading this yesterday I was inspired to make another small purchase of chocs.

It is only through understanding the stuff related to the CO2 scam that it is possible to see the enormous distortions in publicly available media outputs and you have to ask why it is so.

The answer, hidden behind the public facade of “Saving the Environment” or “Saving the Planet” or “helping those in poor countries” is that someone, high above all the moral hand wringing is some manipulative persons who feels the need, the need for

      $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

This was brought home to me yesterday at a funeral for a young woman who lived an outstanding life but who was caught up at the “goodwill/ not for profit end” of the CAGW / Environment catastrophe.

She gave a lot to environmentalism and in return was duped by those behind it all; the big money end.

She firmly believed the CO2 lie.

What is particularly galling is that her pet project Beyond Zero Emissions is collecting, crowd funding, in her name for BZE to do more “research” and the total yesterday had reached 15,000 chocolate frogs.

Just where this “research” may take place is anybody’s guess, Rio, New York, Paris.

Propaganda lives on and will continue to flourish without focal points like this great blog.

In light of this I have decided to make sure each year I buy chocolates equivalent to what I would have spent on newspapers.

KK, This is the new frontier, we spend so much time correcting the flawed science of global warming that is actually no longer relevant to the wider debate. Now that global warming has been successfully weaved into politically correct doctrine, the effort really has to be to undermine the “Virtue Signalling” that keeps it there. The way to do that is to show that the signalling is NOT VIRTUOUS as 25000 grannies in the UK 2012 winter would attest to (If they hadn’t died because they couldn’t afford heat). Given the NH cold outbreaks, this year’s granny toll could be much higher. Will your granny be next!

Good point Bob, the only way to fight the incessant political virtue signalling is to signal or mirror back the results of those “virtuous actions”.

Granny deaths is very much to the point.

Just out of curiosity, were there also grandpa losses?

Someone posted on here a link to show how much is being siphoned off through our electricity bills.

Now Mr T wants more via our petrol purchases.

I didn’t work my butt off all these years only to have Golden Sacks living off my efforts.

In the old days they had a term for that sort of arrangement.

          It was called

KK therein lies the difference between rationalism and radicalism, as you show compassion for the passing of a young life regardless of political faux pars people of similar mind would be making mindless throw away lines on social media of your demise simply because you didn’t comply.

The inability to empathise with all aspects of practise is a fundamental flaw towards discovery.

Although I had spent several years in a group with this young lady I didn’t know her at all, apart from the awareness that she was a keen “environmentalist”.

I went to the funeral and was prepared to hear of a privileged narrow upbringing that too often is associated with wanting to save the planet.

Instead I was blown away by what she had done in exploring the world she lived in.

Amazing, with the only flaw being conned by environmentalism.

People have to learn that research into organisations that you think support your beliefs is vital in delivering genuine action and change.

Disillusioned with major charities we decided to personally find people in our area and anonymously assist them in a small way at this sometimes difficult time of year, we know they got the help and don’t lose sleep wondering if any donations have fallen into undeserving pockets.

                Hi Yonnie,
Sounds as though you may have been inspired to unhook from donating to big name charities for the same reason as me.

There was an exposure about the “overheads” in most of the popular charities.

It said that almost without exception that about 75% of all money donated was being “used” for admin costs.
After that, what little I used to donate went to the Salvos mainly because my wife saw what they were doing locally through a work connection.

                Merry Christmas.

                And keep your eyes open.

Things aren’t always was they seem.

But thankfully CO2 is still CO2, it’s just as important as oxygen in keeping us alive.

20 Dec: WashingtonFreeBeacon: Adam Kredo: Congress: Obama Admin Fired Top Scientist to Advance Climate Change Plans
Rep. Lamar Smith (R., Texas), chair of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, released a wide-ranging report (LINK) on Tuesday that shows how senior Obama administration officials retaliated against a leading scientist and plotted ways to block a congressional inquiry surrounding key research into the impact of radiation…

The report also provides evidence that the Obama administration worked to kill legislation in order to ensure that it could receive full funding for its own hotly contested climate change agenda.

The report additionally discovered efforts by the Obama administration to censor the information given to Congress, interfering with the body’s ability to perform critical oversight work.
“Instead of providing the type of scientific information needed by Congress to legislate effectively, senior departmental officials sought to hide information, lobbied against legislation, and retaliated against a scientist for being forthcoming,” Smith said in a statement…
“Moving forward, the department needs to overhaul its management practices to ensure that Congress is provided the information it requires to legislate and that federal employees and scientists who provide that information do so without fear of retribution,” Smith said…

During an October 2014 briefing with senior DoE staff on the matter, lawmakers heard testimony from Dr. Noelle Metting, the radiation research program’s manager.
Less than a month later, lawmakers discovered that Obama administration officials had “removed Dr. Metting from federal service for allegedly providing too much information in response to questions posed by” Congress during the briefing, the report states…

Congress is recommending a full overhaul of the DoE’s management structure in order to ensure this type of situation does not occur again.

      Thanks Pat,

Very important article about the behaviour of the DOE!

The Low Dose Radiation Response program which seems to have been defunded about 2011 is important because the DOE is supposed to look after the nuclear power industry ijn the USA but instead they have been doing their best to kill it off.

Now the report by Lamar Smith exposes some of their schemes. Hopefully the incoming director will take prompt and decisive action (ie heads rolling).

    Speaking of impact on jobs….

    http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-12-21/motorists-to-benefit-from-cleaner-cars-and-fuel-under-proposals/8137588

Yet another strangulation of the economy by the green vampire….

“Fuel efficiency standards would be tightened, bringing Australia in line with European standards, in a move that the Environment Minister says will save up to 65 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

The move could save motorists more than $500 in fuel costs a year by 2025, but a peak motoring group has warned the tougher standards could also drive up the cost of purchasing new cars and trucks, questioning the testing regime used to determine vehicle emissions.”

More testing, more control, more stangulation of the economy…based on a crisis that doesnt exist….the green vampire needs a “stake” through its heart and soon….

“Regular unleaded petrol – the most popular fuel choice among Australian motorists – would be completely phased out under a series of radical proposals by the Turnbull government.

Banning regular unleaded petrol would dramatically improve the quality of Australian fuel, rated the dirtiest in the developed world, but would likely lead to substantial price hikes for motorists.

Premium unleaded petrol costs an average of 10.7 cents more per litre than regular unleaded, which has been the standard fuel for Australian vehicles since leaded petrol was phased out by the Howard government.

The operators of Australia’s four remaining oil refineries – two in Victoria, one in Queensland and one in Western Australia – would also be forced to rebuild their plants, with costs potentially running into the billions.”

where there’s a will to rescind, there will be a way:

20 Dec: CNBC: Tom DiChristopher: Obama invokes 1953 law to indefinitely block drilling in Arctic and Atlantic oceans
There is no provision in the law that allows the executive’s successor to repeal the decision, so President-elect Donald Trump would not be able to easily brush aside the action…
Canada on Tuesday also imposed a five-year ban on all oil and gas drilling licensing in the Canadian Arctic. The moratorium will be reviewed every five years…

Like other efforts by the Obama administration to advance environmental protection through executive action, it could also be challenged in the courts. It could get tied up there throughout much of Trump’s four-year term.
The Republican-controlled Congress could also try to change the law…
The Obama administration’s action marks the broadest use of the statute ever because it would be far-reaching in terms of the lands it would protect and come without an expiration date…

(American Petroleum Institute) said it believes Obama’s action can be overturned and said it looked forward to working with the Trump administration…

Fifty-nine percent of voters surveyed in September said they would support blocking leasing in the Arctic and Atlantic, according to a study from Hart Research Associates that was paid for by the NRDC and the League of Conservation Voters…
In response, the pro-drilling Arctic Energy Center conducted a survey of 511 Alaskans that found 76 percent supported drilling in Arctic waters…
    http://www.cnbc.com/2016/12/20/obama-expected-to-invoke-1953-law-to-block-offshore-drilling.html

Updated on ‎21‎ ‎Dec: Bloomberg: Obama Said to Use 1953 Law to Restrict Offshore Oil Drilling
by Jennifer A Dlouhy and Josh Wingrove
Obama will invoke a provision in a 1953 law that gives him wide latitude to withdraw U.S. waters from future oil and gas leasing, said the people who spoke on condition of anonymity because the decision had not been announced. Until now the law has been used mostly to permanently preserve coral reefs, walrus feeding grounds and marine sanctuaries…

“If the reports are right, then this is a gift to the public and to our kids that will rank with any in the history of American conservation,” said Niel Lawrence, Alaska director of the Natural Resources Defense Council…
Environmentalists said the action would further bolster Obama’s legacy as the president who has done more than any other to combat climate change…

Using the so-called 12(a) provision of Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act to keep drilling out of big chunks of the nation’s territorial oceans is sure to draw a legal challenge, and there is scant legal precedent on the matter. Trump may rescind Obama’s order, but the statute doesn’t include a provision for reversal and that action may take years to work its way through court…
The Republican-led Congress could advance legislation to undo the ocean withdrawals and eliminate the underlying provision empowering Obama’s move…

Lucas Frances, spokesperson for the oil industry-supported Arctic Energy Center, said company bidding in recent sales of Alaska and federal territory — including $870,000 for state waters hugging the coastline — illustrate there is continued interest in exploring the area.
“The administration has always justified a ban on Arctic development because of an alleged lack of local support or industry interest,” Frances said, adding that polling of Native Alaskans shows that is unfounded.
“If reports are true, it is hard to avoid the conclusion that the Obama administration is playing politics with the future of Alaska,” Francis said…

The action also doesn’t affect waters under state jurisdiction, including part of the Beaufort Sea where a Texas company recently trumpeted a potential 6 billion barrel discovery…

“The Trump administration has the potential to do serious damage to our climate — but in the last few months of his presidency, President Obama can take concrete steps to secure his environmental legacy,” NextGen Climate President Tom Steyer said in a recent letter.

It is sometimes hard to believe the extent to which institutional brainwashing has become.
I’ve lost friends over an election in a country which is foreign to both of us?
This article hit the nail on the head as to how effective the techniques of Edward Bernays has been over the past few decades, and the extent to which the USA has dodged the fatal bullet.
Keep an eye out for projection which is a favourite of the Left.
The best example I can think of at the moment is a snide comment made recently by Barry Soetoro “If I watched Fox News I wouldn’t vote for me either”. Whereas the Clinton News Network and MSNBC and HUFFPO are in fact the fake news and he knows it, the projection technique allows him to turn this around and throw it back. You will see Hairy and his apple buddy use the same technique over and over.

remember the billion-dollar-plus carbon fraud – called “Crime of the Century” in France?
a new development. some say Guez is related to Mimran. who knows?

19 Dec: Times of Israel: JTA: Alleged Jewish gangster shot 5 times in Paris
Dominique Guez seriously wounded in drive-by; reportedly connected to Arnaud Mimran, convicted of $315 million (***CARBON) fraud scheme
The incident occurred Sunday evening in Paris’ upscale 16th district, which features the Eiffel Tower. The victim, identified as Dominique Guez, sustained at least one shot to the head from a drive-by shooting as he was parking his scooter on Flandrin Boulevard near the Arc de Triomph in eastern Paris, according to the RTL radio and television broadcaster. Two unidentified men opened fire on Guez from a moving car…

for more on Dominique “Dodo” Guez, Marco “The Elegant” Mouly & other characters, dead & alive, translate the lot:

20 Dec: Le Nouvel Observateur: Vincent Monnier: Attempted assassination in Paris: the shadow of the middle of the scam with the carbon tax
Well known to the police, Dominique G. is a close associate of Arnaud Mimran and Marco Mouly. His assassination attempt is in addition to the list of murders that have plagued the fraud community for several years.
Is it a new bloody episode in the already stained record of the carbon tax scam? Sunday night, Dominique G., 47 years old and known to police for various scams, was seriously injured by bullets as he returned to his home in the 16th arrondissement. Touched by five bullets in the thorax and head, his vital prognosis is always engaged.
The assassination attempt took place around 6 pm, Boulevard Flandrin, in a neighborhood where there are many embassies and regular police patrols. While Dominique G. had just parked his scooter, two men would have shot him several times before escaping aboard a white van. The victim would have found the strength to drag himself to the Rue de la Faisanderie. “He tried to protect himself by going to the police station on this street,” said a source close to the investigation. He would have collapsed before he reached the police station.

chicken feed by comparison. the latest bunch of carbon cowboys to be disqualified over a VER scam:

20 Dec: CitywireUK: Elliott Smith: Trio banned after investors lose £3 million to carbon credit scheme
Three former directors of a carbon credit investment scheme which lost investors £3 million have been disqualified for a total of 44 years.
The High Court handed down a ban of 15 years against Lee John Thompson and Andrew Michael Spiteri on 30 November 2016. In May this year, Stephen Michael Leary was banned from being the director of any business for 14 years…
The trio were directors of Worldwide Commodity Partners Limited, which sold voluntary emission reduction (VER) carbon credits to members of the public as an investment.
The company was wound up in May 2014 after an Insolvency Service Investigation found the VERs had no potential to give returns…
Anthony Hannon, official receiver in the Public Interest Unit: ‘The lengthy disqualifications handed down show this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated by the Insolvency Service nor by the Court.’

jail-time for this lot – an amusing story, can’t copy & paste, so read it for a laugh:

First summer heatwave coming to Adelaide over Christmas, from Friday: 36,37,40,40,37 (C)

Will our electricity stay on for the duration? Probably – given seasonal lull.

I can imagine Crocodile Dundee saying “You call that a heatwave? Now this is a heatwave!” pointing to Marble Bar in ’23-24!

[Thanks for the support Ian, Jo and family desperately need it. You often get our weather (Perth). Today’s max so far is 42.0C, though I was out and about and my car’s gauge told me it was 47.0C in the sun. But our forecast tomorrow is an almost chilly 29.0C Isn’t it remarkable that we can cope with such variations in temperature. 13.0C in the max over 24 hours, yet the alarmists are worried about a change of just 2.0C or so in global temperature from 14.5C to 16.5C. Well the forecast heatwave for Adelaide has now disintegrated in to a non-event, with today’s top of 38C to be succeeded by highs of 35, 40, 29 and 31 over the next four days.

It still looks like it will be the hottest Christmas Day ever at the Kent Town site which started in 1977, with 37.3C recorded in 1986 and 37.2C last year.

However, at the former West Tce site Christmas Day in 1888 was 42.1C, the hottest on record for Adelaide. In 1941 it was 41.4C and 1945 40.1C.

20 Dec: Daily Caller: Michael Bastasch: Trump Wants To Know How Much Taxpayer Money The State Department Gives Environmental Groups
“How much does the Department of State contribute annually to international environmental organizations in which the department participates?” reads one question on a list sent to the Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs, multiple sources told The Washington Post…
It’s not clear what groups Trump is looking at, but before the election, Trump said he’d “cancel billions of dollars in global warming payments to the United Nations” and reallocate that money to domestic environmental projects.
Trump’s team clarified he would “cancel all wasteful climate change spending,” including funding going to the U.N. Trump’s team claims cutting this spending could save $100 billion over eight years…ETC

20 Dec: Carbon Brief: Sophie Yeo: US trying harder on climate change than ‘unambitious’ China, says study
The US is working harder to reduce its emissions than China, according to research (LINK) published in Nature Climate Change, while India is making more effort than both.
The controversial findings, which rely on a number of definitions for “equity”, are based on the climate pledges that countries submitted to the UN as part of the Paris climate deal, known as “nationally determined contributions” (NDCs)…
The findings are reported in the paper, but also in a corresponding website, Paris Equity Check (LINK), which provides more detail on each country. The graphs below are taken from the website, rather than the paper.
China comes out of the analysis badly. Under all five of the equity approaches, it needs to peak its emissions at an earlier date and at a lower level than it has promised in its NDC…

Lawrence, how about some dough for jo!

20 Dec: ClimateChangeNews: Megan Darby: Laurence Tubiana to head European Climate Foundation
French climate envoy has been appointed to lead fund that supports multiple green NGOs and think-tanks
She is replacing Johannes Meier as chief executive of ECF. The fund promotes effective ways of tackling climate change…
ECF has offices in London, Brussels, Berlin, the Hague and Warsaw. It issued €25.6 million worth of grants in 2015, the latest annual report shows, supporting an ecosystem of think-tanks, NGOs and communications initiatives addressing various aspects of a low carbon economy. The fund contributed £5,000 towards (ClimateChangeNews) Climate Home’s coverage of the latest UN climate talks in Marrakech…
Tubiana steps into the top job from the advisory board, which also counts former Ireland president Mary Robinson and former EU climate commissioner Connie Hedegaard among its members.
Praising Meier’s work, Tubiana said: “In these turbulent political times, and given the urgency with which we need to ***decarbonize our economies, it is with determination and great excitement that I am taking on this new challenge.”…

21 Dec: Reuters: Japan’s JERA signs deal to buy EDF Trading’s coal, freight arm
Financial terms of the deal, first announced in October, were not disclosed, but JERA said its subsidiary JERA Trading Singapore plans to complete an acquisition that will significantly boost the Japanese company’s presence in the global coal trading market by early April 2017.
As part of the transaction, EDF Trading will acquire a 33 percent stake in JERA Trading, while the Japanese firm retains the remainder of the business…

Under the deal, the JERA arm will buy coal and freight trading team of EDF Trading, the French company’s trade arm. It will also take full control of Amstuw BV, which operates the Rietlanden coal terminal in the Netherlands, as well as ***EDF Trading Australia, a business that holds a 7.5 percent interest in the Narrabri coal mine in Australia.
“The deal will make us one of the largest global coal traders with an annual physical coal sales of about 60 million tonnes and major presence in both the Atlantic and Pacific basins,” said Izumi Kai, general manager at JERA, speaking at a news conference in Tokyo.
Kai said JERA Trading aims to bolster coal sales for its Japanese parent utilities to 30 million tonnes in the 2020s from 20 million tonnes now. It also plans to expand its customer base into the rest of Asia and the Middle East, Kai said…
“Coal will remain an important fuel in global energy market. We expect to see some decline in trading in Europe ***due to environment concerns but we aim to retain new buyers in other areas,” he said.

21 Dec:Bloomberg: Coal Traders see end of price rally as China ramps up output
    by Ladka Mortkowitz Bauerova
Chinese coal production in November climbed to the highest level this year. Average daily output jumped 13 percent from the previous month, according to Bloomberg calculations based on data from the National Bureau of Statistics…
Prices may gain further before falling once the winter is over, according to Erik Stavseth, an analyst at Arctic Securities in Oslo, who’s tracked the market for almost a decade. That may encourage some of the world’s biggest suppliers from Australia to Indonesia to ramp up output, even if China doesn’t immediately reduce imports, which would help push prices back down, he said…
Australia, Indonesia and Russia also have the capacity to increase exports, according to Diana Bacila, an analyst at StromGeo AS’s Nena unit in Oslo. The risk of weather-induced supply disruptions are also fading as meteorologists predict that the current La Nina weather pattern, which five years ago caused rains to flood Australian mines, will remain weak to nonexistent, she said.

19 Dec: OilPrice: The End Of The Downturn? BP Steps Up Spending As Oil Prices Rise
    By Nick Cunningham
In just the past few days, BP announced a rash of deals in different parts of the world, signaling the British oil major’s intent to grow after several years of shrinking. Over the course of three days, BP announced a $2.2 billion expansion of its existing facility in Abu Dhabi, as well as a nearly $1 billion investment in natural gas fields off the coast of Mauritania and Senegal. Bloomberg calculates that BP has spent $3.8 billion on acquisitions in 2016, the highest tally in four years…
BP just purchased a 10 percent stake in Eni’s Zohr gas field off the coast of Egypt, the largest discovery ever recorded in the Mediterranean…
Also, shortly after the OPEC deal, BP announced that it was moving forward with phase 2 of its Mad Dog prospect, a $9 billion offshore drilling project in the Gulf of Mexico. Back in July the company gave the greenlight to expand its Tangguh LNG export facility in Indonesia, a move that could cost $8 billion.
Several of the moves have one thing in common: natural gas. BP’s investments in West Africa, offshore Egypt, and Indonesia are all long-term bets on natural gas. The strategy is similar to Royal Dutch Shell, with its more than $50 billion takeover of BG Group, a company that had huge natural gas assets in Australia and East Africa…
In fact, much of the oil and gas industry is on sounder financial footing than at any time in the past few years…

21 Dec: Reuters: Jake Spring: China to tighten green car subsidy program following scandal
China will raise technical requirements for green energy cars to receive subsidies and make awards retroactive rather than at the time of purchase, as it tries to rein in widespread cheating by automakers uncovered earlier this year.
China has spent heavily on its green car subsidies, $4.5 billion last year alone…
The program helped quadruple sales of electric and plug-in hybrid cars in 2015 and fueled a 60 percent jump this year, but it also spurred fraud. Beijing has so far accused 5 automakers of breaking rules on green car subsidies and alluded to more violations by unnamed firms, while state media has reported the names of a further twenty.

“(The cheating) has attracted a high degree of attention from all of society and even the international automotive industry with the State Council attaching great importance to demanding that acts of cheating be seriously investigated and dealt with,” the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said in a statement on Wednesday.
China will soon issue a policy making a variety of adjustments to the program, including setting upper limits on local and central subsidies, the ministry said, adding subsidies will be rewarded retroactively and the government will strengthen the application and inspection procedure.
The ministry said it would particularly change requirements for ***coach buses and special-use vehicles.
The Ministry of Finance announced results of a probe into subsidy cheating in September, with violations particularly prevalent among bus makers.

21 Dec: Forbes: Michael J. Dunne: Can Leonardo DiCaprio Sell Chinese Cars To Americans?
BYD last week named Leonardo DiCaprio its global brand ambassador. This high-profile appointment hints that China’s leading electric vehicle maker is poised to sell cars in the United States.
BYD cars could hit American streets in large numbers by the end of 2018. The most likely model: The BYD E6, a electric SUV that has been prowling the streets of Chicago since 2015. Some 25 BYD E6 models started operating in the Windy City’s ***Uber fleet in 2015…

Hundreds of BYD E6 models are also running on the streets of London and Singapore. The E6 is priced just over $48,000 before reductions from federal and state subsidies…
BYD has been building six models of premium electric buses from its plant in Lancaster, California since 2013. The Lancaster facility, situated 90 miles northeast of Los Angeles, employs around 400 people.
BYD bus prices range from $250,000 to a head-turning $1.3 million for the 60-foot articulated model. Every model runs on electric power with trip ranges starting at 155 miles…
Key (BYD bus) clientele include Stanford University, the Antelope Valley Transit Authority and Denver’s Airport. What these customers have in common is a desire to buy zero emission vehicles. ***And the budgets to do so.

followup to a comment that has gone into moderation:

21 Dec: Wired: James Temperton: Uber’s 2016 losses to top $3bn according to leaked financials
Uber continues to struggle for profitability with third-quarter losses reportedly $800 million on net revenues of $1.7 billion
Uber lost “significantly more” than $2.2 billion in the first nine months of 2016, according to a source close to the company. In the third quarter alone, Uber lost in excess of $800 million, a figure that doesn’t include its now-defunct business in China.

While its valuation has risen to ***$69 billion, privately-owned Uber has been reluctant to talk financials. According to a source speaking to Bloomberg, the company generated $3.76bn in net revenue in the first nine months of 2016, a figure that is expected to surpass $5.5bn in the coming weeks. But as Uber’s revenue grows, and it continues to push hard in new markets, its profitability appears to have stalled.

Net revenue, the amount Uber makes after it pays drivers, grew throughout the first three quarters of 2016, going from $960 million to $1.1 billion to $1.7 billion. According to leaked financials Uber lost at least $2 billion in 2015 and will lose at least $3 billion in 2016. The ride-hailing business is also struggling in the United States, according to Bloomberg’s source. After making a small profit in the first quarter, Uber lost $100 million in the second and is expected to take a heavier hit in the third…

The slowdown in growth could be in-part attributed to Uber quitting China. In August, Uber came to an agreement with rival Didi Chuxing to leave the Chinese market in exchange for 17.5 per cent of the Chinese company. Didi Chuxing invested $1bn in Uber as part of the deal. The third-quarter results leaked to Bloomberg don’t include business in China.
News of Uber’s struggling financials shouldn’t come as a surprise. Analysis of the few financials the company has shared publicly showed losses of $2 billion on revenue of $1.4 billion for the year ending September 2015. As reported by Naked Capitalism, that’s a negative profit margin of 143 per cent. Writing earlier this month, transport industry expert Hubert Horan explained that Uber’s current operations depend on $2 billion in subsidies funded out of the billions pumped into the company by investors…

According to analysis by Horan, Uber passengers are only paying 41 per cent of the actual cost of a trip, with Uber using subsidies to undercut rivals and potentially achieve a monopoly. Since 2012, Uber’s earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortisation and rent/restructuring costs (EBITDAR) has reportedly been worse than negative 100 per cent, with the total loss increasing, not decreasing with time.

Uber’s reported financial struggles aren’t its only problem. Last week the firm started testing its self-driving vehicles in its home town of San Francisco, ***despite not gaining a permit from state officials. On day one a number of vehicles were spotted running red lights and committing other traffic violations. On December 19, Uber admitted there was also a “problem” with the way the vehicles crossed bike lanes.

TONS OF DETAIL AT BOTH LINKS:

3 pages: 26 Jul: Forbes: Mark L. Clifford: Chinese Government Subsidies Play Major Part In Electric Car Maker BYD’s Rise
South Korea’s Samsung group apparently bought into China auto maker BYD as a way of improving its prospects in China, where it has struggled against government protection of the local industry. If that’s the case, it could hardly have picked a better partner, for BYD has been one of the principal beneficiaries of government largesse, emerging as a state champion in electric vehicles and hybrids on its way to becoming the world’s largest electric car manufacturer…

Electric and plug-in hybrid car sales in China quadrupled to 351,000 last year. Government subsidies have played a big part in that surge. Consumers receive a range of subsidies and other perks when they buy electric and hybrid vehicles. But BYD, too, benefits from lavish government support, support that has played a key role as it has established its global lead in electric vehicles…
What a lot of help indeed BYD has received. In the five years ending December 31, 2015, the company reported receiving a total of 2.9 billion yuan ($435 million) in government support. Even in a big country like China, $435 million is a lot of money for a single, nominally private, company to get in the form of government largesse…

The figure for what the company terms “government grants and subsides” is even more significant when measured against total profits of 6.4 billion yuan – equal to about 45 percent of net profit over the past five years. In fact, in 2012 and again in 2014, subsidies outstripped profit. In 2012, government grants and subsidies of 550 million yuan were more than two-and-half times net income of 213 million yuan…
I mention this not because subsidies are evil — though given company officials’ public attempt to downplay the handouts, BYD employees themselves seem to feel that there is something a bit tawdry about relying on government handouts to such an extent — but because they illuminate the way that China supports its industries…

This information is all from official company filings, though some of this information – in the form of footnotes to notes to the financial reports – in turn raise further questions. Take a look at note 7 of the 2015 Annual Report, entitled “Government Grants and Subsidies,” which in turn has its own set of footnotes…
The company tells us that these were provided by an unnamed “local government” in order “to support automotive research and development activities.” Interestingly, it notes that there were no conditions on the loans or even official performance criteria as a condition for disbursing the money. “The government grants did not specify any repayment terms or other conditions that are required to be met.”…READ ALL FOR LOTS OF DETAIL

18 Nov: Fortune: Reuters: China Toughens Up on Producing Fewer, Better Electric Car Makers
Subsidies, paid to the manufacturer for each car sold, can be worth more than a third of the sticker price of a model like BYD’s e6. Subsidies are due to be phased out over the next few years…
In recent months, authorities have cracked down on firms making substandard products and gaming the subsidy schemes through phantom car sales. State support has been tightened and there are new rules for companies applying for a license to make all-electric cars.
These include intellectual property rights; research and development; sales and after-sales support plans; trial production of at least 15 cars; and more. Separately, new safety rules for NEVs, such as battery testing, will make life tougher for weaker firms…

“This is the golden era. In two or three years, you won’t be able to start a new company,” said Wang of Kaiyun Motors.
“There are over 20 ( electric passenger car ) companies. Most will put out one model, maybe not even that, and disappear,” he said, predicting only a handful will survive in the long run…

Thanks Jo and David for all you do and the sacrifices you and your family have made in standing up for your principles when it would have been far easier to just swim with the tide. Hopefully 2016 will go down as the year that it all finally came unstuck for the alarmist juggernaut and rational, reasoned, balanced and apolitical scientific endeavour can resume. You both deserve the reward of seeing this scam dead and buried once and for all.

Have a great Christmas and a safe and prosperous 2017. Thanks again for all you do. Cheers, Allan (@Canberroo on Twitter and Gab)

Is it too much to hope that this essay by Brendan Godwin gets the widespread attention it deserves.

      Brendan Godwin said;

At one of our recent MWD reunions I caught up with and spoke to a colleague who spent many years working at the BOM as a weather observer and forecaster both in Antarctica and Australia. This person is outside of the realm of politics and wishes to remain anonymous. The person’s last job was working on these temperature adjustments. The job of this person’s team was to adjust the temperatures upwards so has been working on adjustments from 1990 until the present.

When that anonymous person comes forward or passes on what he knows, we may finally get to the bottom of the BOM adjustments.

    JUST WOW!

22 Dec: ABC AM: Canavan ‘confident’ Adani project to happen and ‘deliver billions in taxes’
KIM LANDERS: The Minister for Resources and Northern Australia is Senator Matt Canavan and he joins me on the line.
KIM LANDERS: Were you aware of this investigation into the Adani Group?
MATT CANAVAN: Well before I get to that question Kim, can I just thank you for having me on your program because I have been very disappointed in the ABC’s coverage of this issue in the past week.
Your reports have been nothing but fake news.

KIM LANDERS: Let me put some of these specific points to you then. Were you aware of this investigation by the intelligence arm of the Indian Finance Ministry into the Adani group?
MATT CANAVAN: Well as I said before I get to that – in all of your reports this week, you’ve had no views from people in North Queensland so it’s very good to be joining you as a Minister for Resources but it’s even better to be joining you as a proud resident of North Queensland.
I’m looking out at the Great Barrier Reef right now, I’m lucky enough to have a view from my house –
KIM LANDERS: – it sounds lovely. So if I can direct you to back to my question then –
MATT CANAVAN: – one of those days Kim, one of those days Kim it makes you thank God that you were born in Queensland.
But up here people need jobs. Later today I’ll go to work and the biggest issue will be jobs.
The biggest issue will be how do we get jobs and Adani and this project will create jobs.
But none of your listeners or viewers, this week on the ABC would get that point of view.
KIM LANDERS: So Minister may I ask you a question. Were you aware of this investigation into the Adani Group…

MATT CANAVAN: I’m very confident that the Adani project. Hopefully it will happen, it will deliver billions of dollars of taxes to both the Queensland and Australian Governments.
***Those taxes will go to fund things like the ABC and the good work you do do and you do do a lot of good work but we’ve all got our blind spots Kim and unfortunately the ABC has a massive one here on this project.
The people up here in North Queensland whose views you don’t talk to…

MATT CANAVAN: It’s unfortunate that the ABC had an unhappy milestone recently with more than 50 per cent of your staff are based in Sydney, maybe that does colour your reporting on issues like this?
I’m currently trying to fight you taking another video journalist out of Rockhampton.
In fact there will be no video journalists from Maroochydore to Townsville. It’ll be flyover country for the ABC…

KIM LANDERS: Minister if I can ***direct you, I’m asking about, as you say, this very important project for Queensland…ETC

AUDIO: 3mins36secs: 22 Dec: ABC AM: Adani Group faces fraud and corruption probe
The giant Indian company Adani, that wants to build a massive coal mine in Queensland, is facing multiple financial crime and corruption probes at home.
AM yesterday reported on the web of companies, leading to tax havens, that have been set up by the business.
Now we can reveal Indian authorities are investigating companies in the Adani Group over allegations they siphoned money offshore and artificially inflated power prices at the expense of Indian consumers.
    Featured:
David Chaikin, professor of Business Law at Sydney University
    Ariane Wilkinson, lawyer
    http://www.abc.net.au/am/content/2016/s4596134.htm

above was broadcast prior to the Canavan interview.
no transcript for above, but ABC gives it massive coverage below – on their way to a Four Corners program it would seem. Canavan gets a quote, but no mention that he accused ABC of broadcasting FAKE NEWS:

“They are ***very serious allegations and they are being conducted by the ***premier Indian government agency investigating financial crime,” Australia’s ***foremost expert on money laundering, Professor David Chaikin of the University of Sydney, told the ABC…

Ariane Wilkinson, a lawyer for legal team ***Environmental Justice Australia, said the proposal was “seriously concerning” for a range of reasons…

(SURPRISE SURPRISE – HERE COMES BUCKLEY)
“There is an irony,” Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analytics director Tim Buckley said.
“Our government is saying that we need to export coal in order to alleviate Indian energy poverty and yet at the same time the Indian Government is charging that Adani has been inflating the price of coal imports at the expense of the Indian people through higher electricity prices.”

22 Dec: Courier Mail: Carmichael megamine operator Adani targeted by biased ABC: Matt Canavan
by Matthew Killoran & Sarah Vogler
Senator Canavan said the reports were one-sided and did not have a north Queensland voice.
“The reporting has been one sided, not reflective of the view points of the people of Queensland, and north Queensland in particular,” he said.
“I have no problem with the ABC reporting on people critical of coal or critical of Adani, that’s part of robust debate, I just expect them to be fair and balanced as per their charter.”…

The ABC also reported the Adani Carmichael mine was in doubt because of a National Energy Report, released by India’s Central Electricity Authority, which discussed a rise in renewable energy sources in the country and suggested no additional coal-based capacity would be required until 2022…

***In response to Mr Canavan’s comments, an ABC spokeswoman said: “The ABC is consistently seen by Australians the most trusted source of news and information according to annual Omnipoll research, 2016 included.”…

22 Dec: Age: Stephanie Peatling: Cabinet minister Matt Canavan accuses ABC of publishing ‘fake news’ in bizarre Adani interview
A Turnbull government minister has accused the ABC of running “fake news” in its coverage of the Adani coal mine and treating regional Queensland like “flyover country”.
In a bizarre interview with the broadcaster’s AM radio program on Thursday morning, Resources and Northern Australia Minister Matt Canavan said the ABC’s coverage of an Indian finance ministry probe into the Adani group was “nothing but fake news”…

Interviewer Kim Landers tried eight times to get Senator Canavan, an ardent supporter of the coal mine, to address the Indian government’s investigation into the company behind the controversial project…

Senator Canavan said there were “no video journalists from Maroochydore to Townsville”.
But ABC journalist ***Isobel Roe said that was incorrect, pointing out that she was one of at least seven video journalists covering the region…

    typical Greens response:

22 Dec: Guardian: Gabrielle Chan: Federal resources minister accuses ABC of ‘fake news’ over Adani coalmine
Matt Canavan attacks the broadcaster for being one-sided and says Australia’s biggest coalmine would improve the environment
The Greens leader, Richard Di Natale, said Canavan’s comments showed the “lunatic fringe” was in power.
“For Matt Canavan to suggest that Adani’s Carmichael coalmine will be good for the environment, in contrast to all scientific evidence, shows that the lunatic fringe of the Turnbull government is running the show,” Di Natale said.
“Matt Canavan’s comments are an embarrassment and if [the prime minister] Malcolm Turnbull is serious about tackling dangerous climate change he will give Australia an early Christmas present by ***stopping the Adani coalmine from opening and ***stopping Matt Canavan from opening his mouth.”…

****A spokesman for the ABC said Rockhampton would still have three ABC news reporters, plus two other broadcast journalists and a camera operator who contributed to a range of programs and platforms.
“The Sunshine Coast, the second-fastest growing region in Queensland, has two [reporters] and is severely restricted in its ability to produce news and TV stories relevant to its local area and a wider regional audience,” the spokesman said.
“Capricornia remains a well-resourced bureau and maintains a larger news team, as well as two other reporters outside of the news team, who can produce television and video news stories. It will also continue to have a dedicated camera operator.”

    Hi Jo and all,

I can not help but notice that there is a distinct lack of advertising on this blog. Why not? I understand the idea of being all hairy chested and independent but let’s face it, this blog will never be given the sort of public money the ABC and pro-warmist academics will receive yearly from government.

Why not use a method to finance the operation that non-government publications have used for over 100 years? I don’t know anything about these things so maybe there is a whole lot of red tape involved but it seems unfair that people who work so hard for the future of us all should be worried about how to pay the bills. I bet Tim Flannery and Dr Karl never have to worry about such things!

Taking the advertising dollar does not mean compromising your opinions. Andrew Bolt’s blog has had adverts on it for ages and I’ve seen adds for trade unions and green group appear there. I wouldn’t say Andrew has changed his views on those subjects. Imagine WWF or Greenpeace advertising on Jo Nova’s blog! That would be something:)

Anyway that’s my opinion for what its worth, not much I suppose, I better make a more substantial contribution to the tip jar.

Merry Christmas Jo, David and family. Merry Christmas mods and fellow readers who have found their way to this shinning beacon of the enlightenment.

    Cheers.

21 Dec: Daily Caller: Kathryn Watson: EPA Employees Not ‘Intentionally’ Breaking Law By Deleting Official Texts, IG Claims
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officials only archived 86 text messages out of 3.1 million agency employees sent and received in 2015, according to a federal watchdog’s report made public Wednesday by House Committee on Science, Space and Technology Chairman Lamar Smith…
One unnamed senior official configured his phone to automatically delete texts after 30 days.
The IG claimed EPA officials never “intentionally” violated the Federal Records Act and did not include the low number of archived texts in the body of its report, relaying it instead to congressional staff.
Multiple federal laws and regulations require that officials preserve all documents — including email and text messages — created in the course of conducting official business of the U.S. government…
“This vast deficit is astonishing, and further discredits the claim made by EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy that only one out of her 5,000 text messages was an official record according to EPA…READ ALL

21 Dec: San Jose Mercury News: Marisa Kendall: Uber pulls self-driving cars from San Francisco streets, bowing to regulators’ demands
Uber pulled its self-driving cars off San Francisco’s streets Wednesday after the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles revoked their registrations, effectively ending the company’s controversial pilot program after just one week.
The move marked a dramatic end to Uber’s standoff with state regulators over the San Francisco-based company’s insistence that it did not need a permit to test its self-driving cars, even though the state said it did and other companies testing such cars have complied. It’s not clear when or under what conditions self-driving Ubers might return to California’s roads…

The DMV’s crackdown was a setback for Uber in what many viewed as the ride-hailing giant’s attempt to re-write California’s autonomous vehicle rules…
After being forced to bow to state regulators, Uber said Wednesday that it has no plans to apply for a permit, but is “open to having the conversation.”…READ ALL

That saves me having to put my time an effort into it, but not only that, Jo is much better at explaining it, than I could ever be. And she is on top of what is happening 24/7. I could not do that half as well.

      That case is now over.
In the formal legal world a court case that is “dismissed with prejudice” means that it is dismissed permanently.
A case dismissed with prejudice is over and done with, once and for all, and can’t be brought back to court.

You do realize Michael Mann is doing the suing? He very much wants his day in court, otherwise he would not be suing. If the National Review and the CEI didn’t want this, they could have just published an apology for their defamation.

What held the trial up was the appeal by National Review and the CEI. This is now concluded.

Are you a lawyer, Harry? Neither am I. But I am aware that all evidence, on both sides on the argument, must be presented before the Judge. It matters not, who started the litigation. Both sides are treated equally. This is especially true in defamation cases. Going to court will force Michael Mann into a “discovery” process, that he may not want to proceed with. In which case, he will back down.

My personal view is that, National Review and CEI flew a kite to see what would happen. Mann over-reacted, by threatening to sue as he has done before, expecting his opponents to back down.

But this time they appear to be prepared to tough it out, requiring a full discovery, and disclosure. They have called Michael Mann’s bluff, and he will probably not be the happiest of campers, right now.

I will follow this with interest.

I do not know if more discovery is required, I will follow the court case with interest. It will be educating for me.

But I also think a lot of the discovery has already been done during the two appeals. The latest ruling basically says Mann et al’s work is not fraudulent, and the defendants knew that when they defamed him. This is where “malice” comes in.

It amazes me how you [Harry] can extrapolate something from nothing.

You start with an assumption, without stating the grounds for that assumption. You invent a defense that is not in any legal textbook in my library. You admit that you are not in possession of all the facts. You “think” that something has been done in other cases (which by the way are now closed), that cannot be relitigated, and are probably not admissible, and then you guess at the amount of discovery that has been done, or needs to be done.

Having posited all that in the land of Never-never, you take a gigantic leap of faith (but not fact) into stating an opinion on whether Mann’s work is, or is not, fraudulent in law, and then claim to be able to see inside the defendants heads to determine what they knew, when they made the statments they made.

That is certainly where “malice” comes into the picture. It all eminates entirely from yourself.

??CTS. I beg to differ. A reflection on the above #115. Thank you.

I was listening to Dr Tim Ball being interviewed by Dellngpole yesterday. I believe that he is being jointly sued, or concurrently being sued by, Mann along with Mark Steyn? He said that he could have apologised and said his comments were only a personal opinion, withdrawn them and the matter would have died. However, both he and Steyn wanted to force Mann into court and make him reveal his data, formulae and other workings, in order to expose him completely. This was the most dangerous course, as if Mann prevails and wins, both Ball and Steyn will be ruined. However, it appears that there is very little chance of that and, as Mann is refusing to obey the call for discovery, it would appear that he thinks so too. It may well be that the case will fizzle out and Mann will be left with costs and we will still not have proof of how he got rid of the MWP.

The Tim Ball defamation suit is separate. I think Tim Ball said it was scheduled for Feb 2017.

Dr Mann et al has revealed the details of his research several times now, so it might just be considered a moot point. The point of the trials are defamation with malice. But who knows how the discovery might play out.

Keep in mind discovery works both ways. Mark Steyn etc can and will be asked about involvement with fossil fuel lobby groups, cash for comment, funding etc (this relates to malice). They may even get their emails subpoenaed. Like I said above, stock up on popcorn it might be a wild ride.

Mann has so, so much to hide.

He absolutely must hide his sources of funding, and he MUST hide prior emails encouraging him to create the statistical farce that was the hockey stick.

To have these “discovered” w\would be a total embarrassment to the whole AGW scam….

….. Even more than Twotter is.

If Mann can be shown to have prior conversations about “fabricating” the hockey stick, that would establish “INTENT to deceive”, rather than “just basic incompetence”.

The purpose of the action from the defendant’s point of view is that it will force Dr Mann to answer specific questions about his spliced hockey stick and his statistical method.
He will then be open to cross examination.
Effectively there will be a debate.
If Dr Mann withdraws his action then presumably he will attempt to settle or make some statement as to the reasons to mitigate any judgement on costs.
Perhaps “‘justice delayed is justice denied’, this could drag on for years and I want to go home.”
I am not in any position to make any comment about costs’ outcomes.
Skeptics who wonder at it all see warmists, in positions of authority, avoiding reasonable inquiry.
So much has been made of this hockey stick, so much treasure burned through to mitigate its prediction.
Its a pity that this is a court case, because the result will be bipolar, win or lose, when it looks more and more that global warming and climate change are actually beneficial, whatever their causes.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Harry, Doctor Mann wrote a book that expressed his views, on a number of interrellated topics. The views expressed, are now in the public domain. That does not mean that his views are either correct, or complete. They are merely his recollections, assisted no doubt by his professional notes. But they simply reflect his opinions at the time of writing. They do not imply any degree of truth or otherwise.

As I said before, I am not a lawyer, but I do understand that wanting something to be true, as you do, does not necessarily mean that it will be true, when seen in the full glare of the law.

21 Dec: TankerOperator: ICS takes EU to task
The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has slammed the EU’s unilateral proposal, outlined in a report, to incorporate international shipping into its regional Emissions Trading System (ETS)…
“Non-EU nations will be disappointed and very concerned by yesterday’s (last week) vote in the European Parliament Environment Committee, following IMO’s adoption just a few weeks ago of a comprehensive road map for action,” said ICS director of policy and external relations, Simon Bennett…

ICS said that emissions trading, which had been developed primarily for industries, such as power generation, cement and steel production, is completely inappropriate for international shipping, which mostly comprises SMEs typically operating less than 10 ships.
“The EU ETS has been an abject failure. Its unilateral application to global shipping would create market distortion while generating trade disputes with China and other Asian nations, as happened when the EU tried unsuccessfully to impose its ETS on international aviation,” said Bennett…
ICS is working closely with the European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA), who have also expressed concern, to persuade the plenary of the European Parliament, as well as EU members and the European Commission, to reject the EP Environment Committee’s report.
The plenary of the European Parliament is expected to vote on the Committee’s report in early 2017.

15 Dec: Seatrade: Danish shipowners warn European Parliament shipping emissions vote could derail IMO process
MEP Bendt Bendtsen from the Denmark’s Christian-Democratic group, EPP, and member of the Industry Committee said: “By calling for an ETS for shipping in case no international system operates by 2021, my colleagues have unfortunately chosen to cave in to regionalism and ignore the long-term impact for European growth and the environment.
“With only a small part of global shipping touching EU ports, ETS will miss the intended climate target and runs the risk of derailing the IMO process.”
Bendt also warned it could result in jobs losses in Europe…ETC

reminder: Facebook FactChecker Politifact is a Poynter project, so u can imagine how they’ll be fact-checking CAGW by reading the following:

22 Dec: Poynter: Aaron Huertas: Despite fact-checking, zombie myths about climate change persist
As journalists grapple with the rise of fake news, it’s worth examining what happens when policymakers embrace misinformation instead of evidence when it comes to climate change…
For Ben Santer, a climate researcher who has done pioneering work detecting the human fingerprint on modern warming, the stubborn persistence of climate misinformation in U.S. civic life is troubling.
He and other scientists refer to these bad claims as “zombie arguments” since they seem to keep coming back to life even after repeated debunking.
“All of these narratives get repeated again and again and get normalized,” he said. Policymakers who don’t want to address climate change would “rather kick the can down the road and dismiss it as a hoax, and conspiracy.”
Climate change deniers have been helped along in their misinformation campaign by hackers. Santer was one of many scientists who had his emails stolen and selectively posted online in 2009, ahead of the Copenhagen climate summit.
Scientists still don’t know who perpetrated the hack, which targeted emails at a British university, but climate denial blogs, conspiracy sites such as Infowars and right-leaning news outlets were quick to accuse researchers of fraud based on cherry-picked quotes from the email cache…
Looking back on those emails in light of the 2016 Podesta hack, Santer says, “We were the first. In a very real sense, I think [it] was the first email hack that received worldwide attention.”…
Stephan Lewandowsky, a University of Bristol cognitive scientist who has studied conspiratorial thinking, says journalists should rethink how they cover political debates in which one side rejects overwhelming evidence.
“The media have to let go of the addiction to ‘balance’,” he says, “which affords mendacious extremists as much credibility as reasonable and truthful people.”…

ABC News has a long history of false reporting, lying, and even entirely fabricating stories. Here are six of ABC’s most blatant acts of “fake news” that demonstrate why appointing this news network as the arbiter of truth is far from a good idea…

22 Dec: Breitbart: Lucas Nolan: Snopes CEO Accused in Divorce Proceedings of Embezzling Company Money to Spend on Prostitutes
It was announced last week that Snopes would be helping Facebook to determine and label fake news with the help of ABC News and Politifact. The Daily Mail reports that the CEO of Snopes, David Mikkelson, is currently embroiled in a vicious legal battle with his former wife and Snopes co-founder Barbara Mikkelson. The couple divorced sometime around 2014, but legal proceedings have continued between the couple.
Barbara has claimed that her former husband embezzled money from the company. Court documents obtained by the Daily Mail state that Barbara accused David of, “raiding the corporate business Bardav bank account for his personal use and attorney fees.” Barbara also claims that David embezzled $98,000 over four years, which “he expended upon himself and the prostitutes he hired.” Barbara claims that David spent $10,000 from their business accounts between April and June of 2016 to fund an expensive 24-day holiday for him and his “girlfriend.”…ETC

So egregious was the MSM’s behaviour it completely confirmed the wisdom of the switch I have made to alternative information sources, including JoNova.

I went to a graduation at Melb Uni recently where a Uni luminary spoke to the gathered crowd lamenting the ‘post-truth’ world. Wow, what a ‘post-truth’ statement. The left hardly knows what to do with itself, and that is something to behold.

      the ‘post-truth’ world.

…if one might borrow heavily from Winston Churchill, when he suggested he did not know in 1939 what Russia might do in the coming years of WW2.
He created the now well known expression, “a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.” It fits nicely. The deluded, ‘sustainable’ ‘post-truth’ World of today with its politicized and massively wasteful construct of reality, a World that is obviously in the throes of coming to an end, just like the Oozlum Bird, which should be forever designated the Left’s Christmas mascot.

The hockey stick is now known to be a load of twisted and severely compromised nonsense.

So discovery may come down to if Mann created it on purpose with the intent to mislead…

… possibly he did it under a specific request from somewhere… (that would be interesting)

… or if it just came down to basic mathematical, statistical and scientific incompetence.

I really don’t think that Mann can ever allow full discovery about how the “hockey stick” came into being.

      “Always follow the money”.

Who was paying Mann’s salary, when he came up with the hockey stick graph?

Was the graph created at the behest of whomever was paying his salary?

Was the graph created at the behest of some other third party?

Did Mann directly receive additional renumeration from that third party?

Did Mann use resources, including party intellectual copyright, that was owned or provided by his employer, or a third party?

And so on. The people who do financial forensic investigations have a much longer list than I can come up with, but you get the drift.

Yes, who pays Mark Steyns’s salary? Maybe his financial records will be revealed in discovery.

Twotter, you should buy a copy of his book and CD, that way you would know where his money comes from.

          Stein has nothing to hide.

Mann.. I suspect, has a great deal to hide.

Let’s see if he continues to run and hide, shall we.

21 Dec: ClimateChangeNews: Ed King: Let climate sceptics have their moment – it will not last
President-elect Donald Trump heralds a new age of climate doubters, but can this army backed by fossil fuel companies hold off reality in 2017?
Christmas came early for the world’s greying tribe of climate sceptics.
They’re on the cusp of the best and perhaps last chance they will get to comprehensively wreck efforts to limit temperature rises.
The first presents arrived in the early hours of 24 June, when it became clear the UK had voted to leave the European Union, splitting what has been a powerful force for climate change ambition.
The second batch fell down the chimney on 9 November with the election of a man as US president who once said climate change was a “hoax” and has named a coterie of advisors and cabinet picks that look like a Heartland Institute calendar shoot.
Donald Trump’s win has emboldened a legion of right-wing think tanks, conspiracy theorists and keyboard warriors who might have thought their goose was cooked in Paris last year…

Expect a slew of reports through 2017 claiming climate policies are ruinously expensive, harm the poor and do little to deliver carbon cuts…
They’re the battered village cricket team with a bowling attack of chancers that finds itself on a surprising hat-trick. The blood is up. The crowd are baying. One more wicket and they’re convinced the tail will collapse…
As the world pivots towards China, so its desire to make trillions from selling the world its green technologies will dominate.
Not that any of this will dent the newfound vigour of climate sceptics, boosted by the little blue pills of Brexit and Trump. They have the ball. Now we’ll see what they can deliver.

23 Dec: Bloomberg: GOP Fury Over Energy Confronts Reality of Congress’ Snail Pace
by Jennifer A Dlouhy and Ari Natter
Republicans who have vowed to roll back dozens of Obama-era coal, climate and energy regulations are up against a harsh reality: There isn’t enough time to kill them all.
A packed congressional calendar and the challenge of assembling a coalition to vote down each measure will force lawmakers to pick their targets…

On Wednesday Trump named billionaire investor Carl Icahn, a critic of EPA rules, to help him identify the “strangling regulations” that can be axed…
The conservative House Freedom Caucus, the Senate Republican Policy Committee and other lawmaker groups have assembled wish lists identifying dozens of energy and environmental regulations to repeal. No target is too small or too large. The list includes the Clean Power Plan, as well as energy efficiency requirements for decorative gas fireplaces and battery chargers…READ ON

Northeastern Siberia is hitting 10-year record low temperatures this week. Locals are enjoying the weather, posting videos and pictures doing things most people would think of doing only on hot summer days – eating ice cream, swinging in the park, even riding bicycles.
    by Anna Sorokina

23 Dec: LiverpoolEcho: Connor Dunn: Blue Christmas for tenants paying £1.50 PER HOUR for heating
New “low cost” biomass system has led to dozens of complaints
People living in high rise flats resorted to hanging around in Asda to keep warm after a new fuel system left them paying up to £90 every two weeks for heating.
One resident of a flat in Stockbridge Village told the ECHO he was paying £1.50 an hour to heat his home despite it costing £8 a week before a new biomass system was introduced at the end of October.

According to a ward councillor the owners of the flats – Villages Housing Association – responded to complaints by suggesting: “They must pay more if they want more heat”.
Peter Smith is a resident at the Cliffs and the Craigs properties and lives on the 13th floor with his partner who is 18 weeks pregnant.
He said: “This whole fiasco has been a joke since day one. We may as well burn the money we are putting in it, it would keep us warmer.

“The system fails to heat the flat and when it’s on maximum setting it eats money up, I have seen my system using £1.50 per hour for the slightest increase in temperature.”
Peter said both he and his partner are struggling even though they work full time and he feels for the pensioners in the block…READ ALL

The Swift County Sheriff’s Office in Minnesota is investigating the death of a 57-year-old rural Benson man who was found last Sunday, Dec. 18, near the Lake Hassel access north of Benson in western Minnesota..
It’s believed he may have died due to the cold weather.
A passerby discovered the body of Michael Fennel near a vehicle, according to Sheriff John Holtz.

    Environment Skeptic

    Hi yall

Thanks for the work you do, including other guest here like myself, and for helping me discover my true identity here more recently that supersedes merely being ‘Mike’ the skeptic in general. It was part of my own evolution and a great way to be more inclusive about the question of what i have been able to verify to myself and what i have categorically not been able to verify for myself.

The subject of what i have not been able to verify for myself increases on a daily basis and by far exceeds what i ‘have’ been able to verify to my satisfaction in one way or another. For example, water is wet, but not if it turns to ice. 🙂

I remain skeptical about many contemporary efforts to save the world and the delicate life that is remaining, but this should not prevent me from having some faith and hope and love over the Christmas break and beyond.

All the best and good wishes to you, and the to the fish, mollusks, mammals, tree ferns, Kookaburra’s and other flora and fauna on the planet on this occasion….

PS.. i should try one of those ‘Tip Jar’ buttons shortly………. mike

We all go through that journey.

But I wouldn’t be skeptical about the environment. We all have one. So it is probably a good idea to accept the one you have, at least until you get around to changing it.

just watched this Peter Navarro documentary. he worked on Trump’s campaign and has been appointed to a position in his Admin.
good viewing for the Christmas break:

Youtube: 1hr20mins: Death By China: How America Lost Its Manufacturing Base (Official Version)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMlmjXtnIXI

Wikipedia: In 2016, (Peter) Navarro served as a policy advisor to the Donald Trump presidential campaign…
On December 21, 2016, Navarro was selected by President-elect Donald Trump to head a newly created position, as director of the White House National Trade Council.
Navarro has directed and produced a low-budget film based on his book, Death By China…

it seems ironic that Martin Sheen is the narrator of the documentary, given the film he recently made for Clinton activists, begging Electoral College electors not to give their votes to Trump! similar hypocrisy from the Union leaders in the doco, who were totally anti-Trump.

Took me a while to get that, mainly because of all the loaded issues it raises.

Jo and David could not get a job in any US university teaching “The Reality of Climate Science 101” at the moment.

They have too big a grip on reality to be of any value to the hundreds of Climate change course programmers who just “know” that CO2 did it.

Maybe if President Trump could deconstruct the climate change industry by removing all finance for it, then there would be a lot of jobs teaching a history course on how the climate lie was constructed, propagated and eventually brought to a long overdue day of reckoning.

Maybe the course could be subtitled “damaged science or how money and politics influences reality.

No need for courses. All is in the public record. The UN\Marxist\One-World-Order\Green-Blob effort! Such was promoted by the membership of the Council on Foreign Relations, those pompous ignorant politicians. The same; plus all congress critters back to 1978, need be charged with ‘violating their oath of office”, in funding, promoting, and establishing the ‘Church of the Anthropogenic’, in direct contradiction to that stated in the US Constitution.
