Starmer says he will not join Trump’s Blockade of Iran’s Ports, because the Royal Navy has more Admirals than frontline warships.
The Royal Navy has 15 Admirals, but only 13 frontline warships. The First Sea Lord is a General, not an Admiral. General Sir Gwyn Jenkins (Royal Marines) is the First Sea Lord. However, the Royal Navy has 15 serving Admirals of the fleet. 10 Vice Admirals and 5 Rear Admirals. The highest ranking Admiral in the Royal Navy is Vice Admiral Beattie, the Second Sea Lord and Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Admiral Beattie’s motto is thought to be “England expects that every man will do his duty to stop the boats”.
However, Britain will send Minesweepers to the Strait of Hormuz, says Starmer. But ‘Not Yet’, because the last Royal Navy Minesweepers were withdrawn in January. The final minesweepers in the Royal Navy returned home as deck cargo, as they’d become too worn out. Britain has no mine-hunting ships on hand to deploy. “The situation is frustrating”, said former mine warfare officer Tony Carruthers.
Starmer said he is holding a summit with France, which would advance administrative work on a co-ordinated plan to organise formal procedures and standardised rules, to be used to manage the situation, and to solve the problem, by using the Border Force to ship in thousands of engineers from France, in small boats.

However, the UK Defence Journal tells me that the figures, released on 7 November 2025 in response to a question by Conservative MP Neil O’Brien, show that as of 1 July 2025 there were 211 General Officers in the Army, 134 Admirals and Flag Officers in the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, and 126 Air Officers of Air Rank in the Royal Air Force: https://ukdefencejournal.org.uk/mod-reveals-number-of-senior-officers-across-uk-forces/

All of this is majorly confusing. It seems the UK has lots of brass and nothing much for them to do except manage deck cargo and “ship in” thousands of “engineeers” from France. And what does “manage the situation” mean? Which country, UK or FR, gets to provide small boats? A common rule of thumb is that you can put a boat on a ship, but not the other way around. I’m sure a bunch of feckless UK brass hats (and no grunts to do actual work) will make things much better and not foul things up by endlessly bumping their gums while doing nothing. Of course, they are bringing the French too, so I am sure that will help. 😉

Neither the US nor the UK has manned minesweepers any more. It is considered old technology and very vulnerable to modern weaponry.
Instead the UK relies on Specialist underwater drones

It might be OK for the Royal Navy to run a DEI program for its captains because, unlike New Zealand, it doesn’t have ‘reefs’.
It does have plenty of rocks though, so maybe not.

Today’s news, for the first time Australia’s top military officer will be female, Lt Gen Susan Coyle.
I spent two years training to be an RAAF officer in 1969-70. In those days it was simply unheard that women should engage in active combat. Times change, but I doubt that there has been changed in the basic architecture of the human mind, with women historically being better than men for raising babies and men better than women for mortal dealings with enemies.
It would be interesting to watch General Coyle pitted against a non-DEI male General on a survival course. I have been through some week long tough ones in which we were allowed to act like airmen downed behind enemy lines, with authorisation to steal property like food and transport and not avoid forceful acts to survive. (A colleague chanced upon a couple having an affair in the bush, complicated because the male carried a rifle and did not appreciate being sprung delicto). Geoff S

Trump is truly blessed. He is the smartest, greatest leader in history. He is guided by God to do good things for the world. Through the grace of God, he dodged an assassin’s bullet.
He has already made peace with carbon. That alone cements his place as the greatest leader in history. Ridding the world of oil funded terrorists is a fringe benefit that my grandchildren will benefit from.

There is no god and history will see Trump as someone who single-handedly ended America’s dominance in world affairs.

Just listening to a 1985 BBC “Radio Active” radio programme. This was a very funny show hosted by Angus Deayton. . Todays show is carrying out a fake nuclear debate. Fear not, Sir Starmer is going to save democracy by functionally nullifying the incorrect Brexit vote and facilitate absorption into the EU anyway.

TRUMP is doing absolutely the right thing by considering leaving NATO and disengaging from Europe in general.
Europe doesn’t even want to continue to exist in its traditional form and has even opened its borders to its desired replacements.
Europe and the United States no longer have anything in common, if they ever did, which is why the United States was founded in the first place – freedom!

Technically he can’t easily extricate from NATO, he would need a super majority (thanks to Rubio) to get it passed.

Australia is NOT an energy rich country!
Even though Australia and Australians like to think of themselves as “energy rich”, which of course technically Australia is, it is of little practical consequence for non-Elite Australians who now pay some of the highest energy prices in the world.
Australian energy used to be among the cheapest in the world before John Howard signed us up to (but did not ratify) tye Kyoto Protocol in 1998. That point might be regarded as the starting point of national energy self-destruction.
Most Australian energy is exported at prices far cheaper than Australians themselves pay for the same energy from the same sources. (Or in some cases, is unavailable to Australians such as nuclear energy, which was banned by law by Howard.)
Australian domestic energy could be cheaper if we imported all of our energy. E.g. Singapore pays for domestic electricity made from imported natural gas US$0.22-0.40 per kWh vs Australia US$0.25 for domestic electricity.
Australia has been spoiled and become intellectually lazy (and in other ways as well) due to its massive natural resources which are mostly exported unprocessed, usually very cheaply with little benefit to Australia.
Australia would be better off and less lazy if we had no natural resources and relied on innovation through human brain power as do natural resource poor but high-innovation countries like Israel, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland and Taiwan.
240
As you say David we have the resources but they are all locked up by misguided politics!
That must change.
Politics can only be changed at the ballot box, although surveys do tend to motivate the political parties to change policies if they are consistent enough.
70
Always consider that Federation of States established the Commonwealth/Federal Government and the powers and responsibilities are set down in the Constitution, States have more powers than Federal on national by state matters. Legislation on climate change related UN agreements Federal is duplicated by State legislation and regulations and they have a lot of influence on natural resources, electricity supply, development applications and so on.
The red, green, black tape is a spider’s web and to remove or move forward is complicated and time consuming.

You keep bagging the Howard Government but appear to ignore the international politics and how many countries were taken in by the UNIPCC climate change politics, Howard Government formed in 1996 and Kyoto was 1997, and in 1992 Keating Labor Government signed non-binding UN Agenda 21 Sustainability and the climate politics had begun in 1980s, including front cover of Time Magazine and a story inside promoting the climate scare.
And that the Howard (and Coalition ever since) have based emissions reduction on technology developments and without damaging the economy as part of terms and conditions.
In fact during 2014 the Abbott Coalition Government abolished Labor carbon tax (emissions trading scheme starter) of 10% on electricity but the Senate would not repeal the Renewable Energy legislation of Labor.

By 2016 it was apparent to me that there was no way wind and solar plus storage could ever be competitive with coal fired generation based on lignite fired generators. That was based on the work I did for my submission to the Finkel enquiry after operating a pilot scale solar/battery system for 4 years.
I was aghast at the kindergarten level of modelling that supported the Finkel recommendations.
It was a little before that that I started looking into the fairy tales being spun around carbon dioxide actually causing global temperature to rise.
Australia needs to look critically how it has let radical left morons take over institutions like their BoM, their ABC and their CSIRO. It has been a disaster for Australia’s economy and LNP have enabled that to happen.
Keating’s productivity commission made great strides in improving Australia’s productivity. Much of that gain was centred on getting base load power cost down to $23/MWh by 2003 after a decade of hard work in removing bloated bureaucracies from monopolies over the generation and distribution of electricity. All undone by Howards RET legislation. I know Abbott tried to back track but he was not smart enough to defeat Turncoat.
LNP are lost cause. If any of them think they offer merit then they should go cap in hand to Pauline and Malcolm Roberts and ask how thety can contribute to ridding Australia of this radical left blight.

FWIW – more on the “Beyond Meat” saga
“A tragic story is unfolding in the world of high finance and low-grade soy products. Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal reported, “How Beyond Meat sank from a $14 billion plant-based protein powerhouse to a penny stock.” Weird! Glasgow COP 2021 Morrison Government press release in part …
The Morrison Government will act in a practical, responsible way to deliver net zero emissions by 2050 while preserving Australian jobs and generating new opportunities for industries and regional Australia.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Minister for Industry, Energy and Emissions Reduction Angus Taylor today released Australia’s Long Term Emissions Reduction Plan (the Plan), to deliver net zero emissions by 2050.
The technology-driven plan sets out a credible pathway to net zero by 2050, while preserving our existing industries, establishing Australia as a leader in low emissions technologies, and positioning our regions to prosper.
The Plan is based on our existing policies and will be guided by five principles that will ensure Australia’s shift to a net zero economy will not put industries, regions or jobs at risk.
The principles are: technology not taxes; expand choices not mandates; drive down the cost of a range of new technologies; keep energy prices down with affordable and reliable power; and, be accountable for progress.
The Plan focuses on driving down technology costs and accelerating their deployment at scale across the economy.
The later Dutton Plan offered 5 large and 2 small nuclear power stations/plant to replace coal fired power stations shut down lost capacity and add more. All existing technologies would continue (note contractual arrangements for those so called renewables solar, wind and batteries) with nuclear funded by Federal Government, at least in part, like Snowy Mountain Hydro is a wholly owned subsidiary of Federal Government. It states that all existing technologies would continue subject to decisions by the owners, incentive subsidies end when contract period ends.

Light speed weapons?
Directed energy and the future of the ADF
Authored by ASPI Senior Analyst Malcolm Davis, ‘Light speed weapons? Directed energy and the future of the ADF’ analyses how DEW technologies — including high-energy laser (HEL) and high-power microwave (HPM) systems — could reshape counter-drone and missile defence, and makes the case for a dedicated Australian DEW strategy.
The report finds that DEW have the potential to create an inflection point in modern warfare. By delivering effects at the speed of light and at very low cost per shot, they offer a fundamentally different approach to countering the growing threat of low-cost drones and, over time, more advanced missile systems.
Recent conflicts, including the war in Iran and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, highlight the need to invest in cheaper and more sustainable defence capabilities. While DEW are unlikely to replace traditional missile defence systems, they could reduce reliance on them and provide a more sustainable and scalable layer of defence.
“For Australia, which depends on a network of northern bases to support a strategy of deterrence by denial, there is a clear need for investment into the development of DEW to ensure greater resilience in the face of threats such as armed drones, and eventually, more advanced missile systems,” the report states.
DEW offer several operational advantages over traditional weapons. They can engage targets at the speed of light — around 300,000 kilometres per second — and, with a stable power source, provide effectively unlimited magazines, addressing a key limitation of missile-based defence systems.
“Their cost per kill is very low relative to a traditional defensive missile: it costs cents or, at most, a few dollars per shot, compared with up to $US 4 million for advanced air defence missiles, such as the Patriot interceptor missile.”
Adversary capabilities are also maturing rapidly. China has unveiled a 20-gigawatt power source for a microwave weapon designed to attack low-Earth orbit satellites, including Starlink satellites, underscoring the need to view Beijing as a strategic competitor in this field.
At the same time, the report emphasises that DEW are not a complete substitute for existing capabilities. Technical challenges remain, including power generation, range limitations, line-of-sight constraints and sensitivity to atmospheric conditions.
As a result, the most effective defence strategy will combine DEW with traditional integrated air and missile defence systems to counter the growing drone threat.
The report highlights the maritime domain as a key area of opportunity for Australia. Integrating DEW into naval surface combatants could enhance close-in defence against drones and, over time, missile threats, improving the survivability of surface vessels.
This aligns with the importance of maritime capability in Australia’s National Defence Strategy, where strengthening fleet air defence at sea remains a priority given the scale of current naval investment.
To accelerate development and ensure timely integration of the technology into the force structure, the report recommends the development of a dedicated DEW strategy. This would strengthen the defence industry’s ability to support sovereign capability and embed continuous modernisation.
Such a strategy should also emphasise collaboration with key partners, including through AUKUS Pillar II, as well as with countries such as Japan and South Korea.
40
DEW will be powered by reliable and cheap wind energy and can thus be deployed up to an astounding 10% of the time. Recharging capacitors will complete in a mere day or two.
Another option is for them to be powered by diesel, kindly supplied to us by the people from whom we are most likely to have to defend outselves. That’s ok! Look at Russia v. Ukraine-EU.

A tanker sanctioned by the US has appeared to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, despite a US blockade on the chokepoint, shipping tracking data shows.
Earlier, we reported that two ships — the Aurora and Elpis — had transited the strait.
Now, the Malawi-flagged tanker Rich Starry is currently in the Gulf of Oman and has listed China as its destination.
Rich Starry is on the US list of sanctioned vessels for helping Tehran evade energy sanctions.
Rich Starry is a medium-range tanker that is carrying about 250,000 barrels of methanol on board, according to the data.
It loaded the cargo at its last port of call, the United Arab Emirates’s Hamriyah.
