“It’s a disaster”: Germans allowed to use oil and gas to heat their homes again

German Government, storm

By Jo Nova

In a shock move, the German government will allow citizens to use oil and gas to heat their homes again, even though this might increase global temperatures by a thousandth of a degree in 80 years time. The government or rather, the taxpayers, will still be forced to subsidize 30 to 70% of the cost of a new heat pump, but won’t actually fine anyone or put them in jail if they buy an oil or gas heater. (Yay, “freedom”.)

Green groups responded with all the wisdom we’ve come to expect:

This reform is a disaster’: Climate groups slam Germany for scrapping renewable heating law

EuroNews

One critic has called the move “an unconditional fulfilment of all the wishes of the fossil fuel lobby”.

“This reform is a disaster,” Green Party parliamentary group co-leader Katharina Dröge told the German Press Agency (dpa).

“The CDU and SPD [Social Democratic Party] have today made it abundantly clear: climate protection is completely irrelevant to this coalition,” she added. “The federal government has abandoned the achievement of the climate targets.”

Germany  still relies on oil and gas for 80% of its heating needs. The mandate to force people to switch to at least 65% renewables for heating came into place in 2023.

People disliked heat pumps so much they just stopped building new homes.

Germany accused of ditching climate targets as it scraps renewables mandate

By Deborah Cole, The Guardian

She said: “The dilemma was that Robert Habeck’s heating law had unsettled homeowners. Sales of modern heating systems, heat pumps and modern gas boilers plummeted. People stopped building altogether.”

The dispute poisoned relations in the coalition of Social Democrats (SPD), Greens and pro-business Free Democrats and is often called the beginning of the premature implosion of that government.

The left always go too far.

Germans are still free to buy heat pumps, or use biomass or biofuel if they want to. The “disaster” here is that Germans have some freedom to choose. And if the renewable heaters were cheap to run, no one would need a mandate to force compliance.

The Green Left Agenda is falling apart.

    People stopped building altogether.
“altogether” sounds so serious: entirely; completely; utterly
That’s interesting. I wonder if there is information. Even a 10% or 20% decline in building should work its way back through the supply chains. Has there been a decline in forestry and wood products activity? How about the making of kitchen sinks or bathroom commodes? Window glass? Carpet? Inquiring minds want to know.

Speaking of … ze Germans, there is this absolutely bonkers story.

    https://www.eugyppius.com/p/pensioner-facing-police-investigation

Pensioner facing police investigation for the crime of calling serially dishonest German Chancellor Friedrich Merz “Pinocchio”

When … Friedrich Merz and Baden-Württemberg Minister President Winfried Kretschmann came to Heilbronn last October for the opening ceremony of the Innovation Park Artificial Intelligence (IPAI), the celebrity visit occasioned discussion discussion on social media.

A post appeared on the Heilbronn Police Facebook page informing locals about a temporary flight ban enacted for security during the visit. A resident of Heilbronn responded by writing that “Pinocchio is coming to [Heilbronn].” He included a long-nosed emoji.

Three months later, at the end of January, the man could hardly believe his eyes as he received a letter from the criminal police informing him that he is now under investigation for his comment. He is suspected of committing the crime of insult as prohibited by Section 188 of the Criminal Code.

StGB §188 is the notorious “lèse-majesté” statute, which the Bundestag expanded substantially in 2021 when politicians grew tired of being criticised for suspending most of our democratic freedoms in a mad drive to exterminate a respiratory virus. As currently formulated, StGB §188 enhances penalties for “insult, malicious gossip and defamation” when the rabble direct these at “persons in political life,” and also makes these transgressions easier to prosecute. In this case, the pinched schoolmarms on the “social media team” who run the Heilbronn Police Facebook page filed a complaint with prosecutors as soon as they noticed our pensioner’s comment. Apparently it is their policy to monitor comments and cry to teacher whenever they see anything they don’t like.

I’m not sure which is worse, that Germany has such an insane law against mocking politicians, or that the chancellor employs a team full of snitches to root out and prosecute even the mildest of insults. I don’t recall the exact number, but in a post a few months back Eugyppius mentioned that Merz’s team has reported THOUSANDS of posts for violating that idiotic statute. It’s a shame that AfD politicians appear to have taken the high road and not abused the same statute. Pretty much every word ever written about any of them violates it. Imagine how quickly that little law would get repealed if AfD politicians started getting progressives tossed in jail for calling them Nazis or any of the other crap they are constantly being smeared with.

The absurdity of it all suggests just how bad/guilty/inept the ruling class is.

The “climate denier” namecalling and denigration doesn’t work as well now as it used to, so presumably they have to do more crazy forms of intimidation.

That sounds like the opening line of a Babylon Bee parody, but like all this insanity of the Left, it’s true.

The Left are so crazy now it’s increasingly difficult to distinguish between parody and reality.

They have, in fact, become parodies of themselves.

The Germans should be allowed to use energy or they may again start looking for more Lebensraum.

We know or should know what happened last time they did that.

Remember also that the National Socialists were big advocates for “renewables” and other ecofascist ideas like biodynamic farming (in earlier years), just like modern day socialists.

Farmers who make a point of not spraying biocides of various sorts around their farms , find it really hard to not be biodynamic.
You might be talking about Demeter certified farming.
My old Webster dictionary defines biodynamic as the opposite of biostatic.

Some years ago I recall a report that in Germany cut logs were being kept under locks/ storage cages etc because of theft.
It seems that the choice between being warm in winter or being a good little ‘Greta’ and freezing had been decided.

Firewood theft: The forests where trees are going missing

      2 March 2023

In the stands of oak, birch and beech that populate Germany’s forests, hundreds of trees have been stolen, one-by-one. In one forest alone – Konigs Wusterhausen, near Berlin – poachers took 100 pine trees last winter. In response, a new initiative sprung up to encourage hikers to report sightings of suspicious stumps or people. Managers have begun to nestle cameras into tree branches.

The reason? Wood poachers have been harvesting their winter heat. In October 2022, the Working Group of German Forest Owners Associations (AGDW) reported that firewood scavenging was on the rise in the country’s forests, where people were felling trees and chopping them up for easy transport, or in some cases taking wood that was already chopped down from the side of the road. The AGDW estimated the value of stolen wood from German forests the previous winter had reached into the millions of Euros.

the value of stolen wood from German forests the previous winter had reached into the millions of Euros

Maybe the state should sell all that wood themselves. Bring in a forester to cut down sickly trees and cut firebreaks through the forest, sell the good wood to a lumber-mill, and sell the waste-wood that is not up to lumber standards to local firewood companies (or run it through a chipper and use/sell it as mulch). That wood ensure they get paid for that wood AND make their parks less attractive to ‘wood poachers’.

But that wood make too much sense.

That makes perfect sense. Which is why it is not done. The government is there to frustrate sensible behaviour, not accomodate it.

It seems the problem is that people are helping themselves. They are leaving out the middle men altogether. The way it used to be when people were allowed to forage in State Forests for fallen timbers for own use. You can do it here for a small fee.

Thanks David, If it is on the BBC it must be true (apart from some editing).

It was on NoTrickZone where Pierre, a climate sceptic, had in response to local and German matters by installing a large stove/heater powered with cut wood.
He also arranged a future supply as well.
If that doesn’t work, then he might try using wood from Finland or Sweden, which (as Ireland found out with peat bog ) can be burnt without penalty because it is imported**).

** you aren’t allowed to burn native peat bog in Ireland as it is smelly, smokey and releases CO2. But imported stuff from the EU is OK because it is imported.

And Germany imports electricity from France which is generated by Nuclear Power Stations.

No wonder that Germany recognises the mistake in shutting down it’s own Nuclear Power Stations (Thanks to that East German Stasi Agent, Angela Merkel), and is now restarting it’s Nuclear Power.

The French nuclear fleet is the backbone of half of Europe’s grid. It’s going to be a real mess when that fleet ages out.

Most of their nuclear plants were built in the 1980s and are nearing the end of their lifespan, with almost none being built since the turn of the century. The average age of their nuclear plants is 39 years, with an average projected lifespan of 40 years. Obviously, they’ll do what the can to extend that lifespan, but that buys them maybe another 10-20 years before they’ll have no choice but to star shutting them down. What will the rest of Europe do when France’s nuclear surplus evaporates and the frogs keep all that sweet nuclear electricity for themselves?

Yes. That’s why it’s hilarious. Emission free nuclear power? It runs on deadly nuclear emissions. But now really dangerous nuclear emissions are nothing compared to CO2. Infra red or radiant heat is now more deadly than gamma, beta rays, X rays or neutrons. Real science is nothing compared to tobacconist footballer Al Gore’s Green science, which is not science at all. Uninformed opinion is now more important than fact.

The problem is that the only conservative party, AdF, is being kept out by the socialists and the greens in coalition. Similar to Geert Wilders being denied power by the other lesser lights forming a blocking coalition. The AdF and Geert need to win an absolute majority of seats to gorm their respective governments… Much like the unaparty here close ranks to keep Pauline at bay. Stupidity writ large.

Really hate that word “mandate”. After COVID and now the crazy rush to de-carbonisation that word and all its actions are offensive. If a product is good enough it should be able to attract users because of its value. Not be forced upon us. If you want to drive an BPEV or install a heat pump, go right ahead but should never be forced. Also, for those wanting to drive a BPEV, or install a home battery dont tell me you’re saving the planet either.

Heating with nuclear power: Company has discovered a loophole in the nuclear phase-out law – and intends to exploit it.

A German nuclear power manager wants to build new nuclear power plants in Germany with support from Estonia. His trick: Only plants for electricity generation are legally prohibited. Therefore, he is focusing on reactors that supply heat for households and industry.

Due to these high safety standards, the Finnish Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) has already supported the use of the reactor in close proximity to residential areas. One reactor is intended to supply up to 20,000 households. The goal is to achieve a price of €15 per megawatt-hour. District heating in Germany often costs over €100 per megawatt-hour. Given current climate and energy policies, prices are more likely to rise than fall in the future.

      €15 per megawatt-hour = $A25 per megawatt-hour compared with $525 per MWh in SA.

Witnessing the entire climate boondoggle fall apart makes me happy.

For decades we have known this climate crap is …well crap…I remember talking to a like-minded friend at least 10 years ago that it is a matter of time until the fraud of CAGW aka ‘climate change’ was unmasked.

The immutable laws, the laws of nature, economics, the desire for human flourishing, were then as they are now immovable objects that simply and passively eventually dissolve the hoax of ‘climate’.

Yes, the damage done during the hallucination is massive, but it will be undone.

Time, time and pressure, that’s all it takes….

Time for one of my favourite recent quotes —

APRIL 23 2025 — Lee Zeldin, in a Wall Street Journal op-ed, stated: “We are driving a dagger through the heart of climate-change religion and ushering in America’s Golden Age.” This was part of his announcement of 31 deregulatory actions at the EPA, targeting environmental regulations, including those addressing climate change, to reduce regulatory costs and promote economic growth.
