Discussed a few days ago about products “Made in Australia” and how this could be claimed if the packaging and labour content was the biggest cost input rather than the ingredients. Well in todays News.com this article about imported tomato paste in many Australian produces claiming to be made hear.
Love the blurb, “independent analysis ” finds that many products use imported tomato paste.
Could have saved the investigators lots of time and money, simply look up customs clearance documents to find how much and from where, tomato paste is imported.
Nothing new of course, since its heyday in the 60’s and 70’s the Australian tomato industry went into decline. Lots of reasons but a big one was simply cost. Companies in Australia could import product from the four corners of the earth cheaper than it could be produced locally. The role played by the “big two” in creating this situation is not mentioned of course as these outlets always claim to “support our local farmers” when screwing every producer into submission by importing cheaper products to compete with the local stuff.
So, IIRC, tomato paste has been imported into Australia from:—– Mongolia, China, Italy, Turkey, New Zealand and sundry other emerging economies.
