From Donald Trump: “ Any State that has built and relied on WINDMILLS and SOLAR for power are seeing RECORD BREAKING INCREASES IN ELECTRICITY AND ENERGY COSTS. THE SCAM OF THE CENTURY! We will not approve wind or farmer destroying Solar. The days of stupidity are over in the USA!!! MAGA”
I expect some edits coming through later.

I would love the CSIRO to answer that. Why do we pay so much for scientific advice when it is wrong? Sell the CSIRO. We get nothing but bad actors. And how much does that cost us?

And another get quote from Trump, which I’m sure Sussan Ley could use free-of-charge with a couple of judicious changes:

“Unreliable wind and solar energy sources displace affordable, dispatchable energy, compromise America’s electric grid, and denigrate the beauty of our Nation’s natural landscape. Reliance on so-called ‘green’ subsidies threatens national security by making the United States dependent on supply chains controlled by foreign adversaries,” the White House released in a statement.
“Ending the massive cost of taxpayer handouts to unreliable energy sources is vital to energy dominance, national security, economic growth, and the fiscal health of the Nation.”

Short, sharp and to the point. You know you can, Sussan.

Trump has an impressive team around him. They are so clear on their understanding. I have not seen any other observation outside my own on the “displace” aspect.

The CSIRO are really guilty here. They come out with capacity factors like 50% for coal plants. The unrestrained capacity factor of coal plants is in mid to high 90s. The only reason it is declining is because subsidised random generation is reducing its market share.

CSIRO is corrupt. Put them on the market and see if anyone is stupid enough to buy the organisation.

The CSIRO is a state owned enterprise with a dubious bent, they should outsource or continue to be irrelevant. The free enterprise model works best at finding the truth when it comes to science and technology.

Whatever you do, do not hold your breath. Neither the leader of the LNP, nor, probably 50% of them , will dump net zero or the prosperity destroying subsidies keeping the scam afloat.

That leaves the ALP in power to do as they see fit.

Nothing will change in the LNP & only the lights flickering & finally shutting down will bring any change to this ludicrous fantasy!!

Victoria is in the grip of drought, certainly in my district the winter rainfall is well below average and paddocks every where, while green, have no feed in them.
Apparently this has been “noticed” by both the state and federal governments who have “promised” to provide drought relief, whatever that means.
Mean while a very large water storage on the Goulburn river continues to fall in capacity so that environmental flows can run down the river. Lake Eildon normally recharges over winter and spring, the water originally to be made available to farmers in the Goulburn valley to produce all manner of food stuffs for both domestic and overseas consumers, so a nett producer of wealth for both state and country. Not any more, currently at about 55% of capacity and still discharging more water on a daily basis that it receives in there will be restrictions on what is available to farmers this growing season although at this time I have not heard of allocation restrictions. ( Never talk about the bad news until its to late)
As I have mentioned before, I am sure these environmental flows coincide with the lack of wind to drive the turbines that can power tens of thousands of homes, but don’t.
Electricy is important to keep the lights on in Melbourne, food on the other hand, well we all know that comes from the supermarkets so no problems there.

I’m in NE vicdanistan. As per Sambar, the rainfall tally has been low for a long time, often around a third of the monthly average. It will green the paddocks but will not replenish the soil water reserves. Most of the damage from this natural drought is associated with the timing of the rain that does land and the forecasts from the BOM.

In my district, several months ago, during the optimum sowing time, the BOM forecast 20-40mm of rain. Unsurprisingly the local farmers raced out, acquired seed and proceeded to sow the paddocks. Before the rain hit, the BOM downplayed the 20-40mm, first to 10-20, then to 1-5. The eventual rainfall was less than 5mm. The seed germinated and then failed as no follow up rain was to be found.

It’s not the BOM’s fault that the rain did not fall, nor for the less than average rainfall over the last 2 years. But it is a consequence of their publications that a large portion of the local farms have wasted millions on crops that will likely, (at best), barely break even.

A weather forecast needs to be improved, it needs to state the probability of it being completely wrong. It’s pointless stating what MIGHT happen in 5 days time if that forecast is at best 5% accurate. This change should be implemented without delay. They should be made to show the error range in their forecasts.

“A weather forecast needs to be improved,”

In that case the BOM needs to be sold. No Govt organisation has any incentive to perform past the pitiful amount to keep their Minister off their backs. If BOM are wrong 80% of the time it doesn’t matter to them, they still get paid.

Anyone who relied on weather forecasting would recognise this and decide which private forecasters they would pay for information. At that point the forecasters get it right or go broke.

I expect some bright young person will program an AI to do weather forecasts, outperform the BOM and become another billionaire.

A weather forecast needs to be improved

Yes, and that was the reason for Australis 2, the BOM’s new supercomputer.
Budgeted at $59M back in 2015, it’s now blownout to $866M because they need a cybersecurity frontend!
Go figure on the incompetence and cost there!! Makes Snowy 2 look good.
But at least they can now forecast the weather 4 days ahead instead of 2.

/and still not get it right.

I expect some bright young person will program an AI to do weather forecasts, outperform the BOM and become another billionaire.

Even AI would require adequate precise data from adequate areas at the start of their forecast period to feed into their exhaustive and reliable models to get a reliable forecast.
Cloud coverage tomorrow? Ocean temps and current strengths? CO2 effects to several decimal places?

Is anyone in the BoM tasked with the job of measuring the accuracy of any of their forecasts?

However, I have found their rainfall predictions quite reliable in the middle of a drought, so on average they probably get to 80%.

It’s not the BOM’s fault that the rain did not fall, nor for the less than average rainfall over the last 2 years.

They are party to the climate scam that have promoted the wind turbines and solar farms. Ccut down the trees, replace them with hard dark surfaces and wind stillers that slow onshore winds and you are on your way to converting arable land into deserts.

The BoM should be sounding the alarm bells on what is happening not encouraging it. Given their position, I would place them squarely in the frame for complete sacking.

We are in a similar position on the NSW Central Tablelands. Paddocks have little growth, but are “green” after some rain. But this is not abnormal for this time of the year – Spring is on the horizon, but not yet with us. We have been feeding our cattle – but no more than usual for this time of year.

      Is there a similarity ?

Originally Finnish territory Petsamo (4000 sq.mi) region was awarded to Finland by the Treaty of Tartu (1920) after Finland’s independence from Russia. That gave Finland access to the Arctic Ocean.
Significant nickel deposits were found there in the 1920s–30s. Mining rights were developed by the Canadian company INCO (International Nickel Company) together with British investors.
Both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union were very interested in the deposits, since nickel was crucial for producing stainless steel and military alloys.

      1939–40 (Winter War)
The (8.5 Million sq.m) Soviet Union demanded more land from Finland, including Petsamo. Finns stubbornly refused and were bombed into submission. In the Moscow Peace Treaty (1940) Finland had to cede Karelia, but Petsamo remained Finnish.

      1941–44 (Continuation War)
Germany occupied the area together with Finnish forces, securing nickel deliveries. Petsamo Nickel Ltd. (Anglo-Canadian) was squeezed out, and much of the output went to Germany’s war industry.

      1944–47
Under the Moscow Armistice (September 1944), Finland ceded Petsamo (which was not taken by Red Army !) to the Soviet Union. The Paris Peace Treaty (1947) confirmed Petsamo as part of the USSR. Freedom loving Western democracies did what ? S

Laser-free vision correction uses electrical current to reshape eye

Imagine correcting your vision in under a minute – no lasers, blades or pain. Scientists have developed a novel, non-invasive technique that reshapes the cornea using only a mild electric current and a temporary pH shift. In early trials, it reversed myopia without the need for traditional surgery – and could be the most radical advancement in eyesight correction technology since LASIK.

This emerging method that can remodel the cornea through mild electric potential, known as electromechanical reshaping (EMR), was detailed by researchers from Occidental College and the University of California, Irvine, during the American Chemical Society’s Fall 2025 meeting this week.

Made primarily of collagen, the cornea maintains its shape thanks to the arrangement of charged molecules and proteins. The researchers discovered that by applying a low-level electrical current through a specially designed platinum “contact lens” electrode, they could change the pH of the tissue, increasing the acidity of the corneal tissue, which would make it pliable just long enough to reshape – like fitting something into a mold. In this case, the mold is the platinum lens.

Then, once the current stops and the pH returns to normal, the cornea hardens again and holds its mold-fitted shape. The whole process takes about a minute, requires no cutting or removal of tissue, and, so far, has shown no structural damage or cell death in the tested samples. And the researchers believe EMR could replace LASIK surgery.

    https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/1094211

Finally, something to replace that barbaric problem-ridden Lasik.

Only 13.7% of NDIS kids applicants have disability which a GP or a Nurse can (officially?) recognise:

    Cerebral palsy: 2.8%
    Spinal cord injury: 1.2%
Other physical (e.g., skeletal, muscular, amputations, mobility impairments): 9.6%
    Sensory disabilities: 7.5% total
    Hearing impairment: 4.5%
    Visual impairment: 2.1%

In the AI-vs-AI era, scammers don’t need to trick millions of different people; they only need to break one AI model

A study looking into agentic AI browsers has found that these emerging tools are vulnerable to both new and old schemes that could make them interact with malicious pages and prompts.

Typical Africans… something goes wrong, blame someone else and then take your anger out on the successful Indians or Chinese traders. Same all over the continent, a bit like certain cities in the USA that are always rioting and looting…

That article is thick with Yankee propaganda, the rubbish about how bad it is for China to be a manufacturing economy and have to import raw materials… Look at Singapore, Japan or Hong Kong, countries with nothing but talent! …and think that if China imports, they are buying that stuff off someone, and THAT someone is getting rich too.

If only we could be a manufacturing super-power like China!

Seems we are having a big discussion on productivity and taxes. I doubt there will be much discussion on the bloated unproductive public service, or billions wasted on unproductive power generation or the billions spent unproductively closing the gap that never closes.

A while after receiving vaccinations for COVID-19 virus protection I started to see irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation) appear on my blood pressure monitor and after consulting a GP I was given various tests and sent to a heart specialist who after an ultra sound examination told me to get on with my life, and keep taking blood thinners as prescribed by the GP. The AF events have become fewer and often days in between events.

Before vaccinations I had been told after blood tests by a GP that my kidneys were in excellent condition, and she added “that is important”. I am now a couple of years later consulting a specialist since tests have revealed my kidney function is 40%. Since the first consultation and advice I was given no further deterioration has been detected.

Meh- so what if your heart is rooted an your kidneys packing up, it could have been worse… you might have caught covid!

I worry about these blood tests, do they really measure what they seem to measure, and how many wrong results do they give? We have become a society of ‘medicine via blood chemistry’, and I have a feeling a doctor wouldn’t argue with the results, just pass you onto someone else.

I had a weird experience with Youtube yesterday. Apparently I am on suicide watch with Google.

I started to watch a discussion between two podcasters I like because I had never seen them talking together. As it starts a green pop up appears under the video. “You are not alone” it says and provides contact numbers for Lifeline , Beyond Blue and the like. I went to the corner menu and clicked “why am I seeing this?” the only other option was feedback.

Apparently this is triggered by analysis of my viewing patterns. WtF? I thought and looked at my history. About the only thing that even looked related was a viewing about near death experiences 3 months ago.

So the feedback button was pushed and given along the lines of what the hell are you people doing? how did you arrive at this conclusion? Do I watch to many car repair videos or something?

As all this was going on pop up adverts for products and services kept interupting the video. Something I hadnt seen before , and wasnt there when I logged in again later.

It was all very weird, like I had lobbed into a test environment.

Later the same day Mrs Y cant login to her MS email account, and the error message says to try a different machine,a different network or use a VPN. Hey Microsoft how about just letting people login rather than asking them to do access gymnastics.

Martha’s Vineyard residents forced to go vegan, become ‘social pariahs’ because of bloodsucking insect.

Residents in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, are being forced to change what’s on their plates as a dangerous tick-borne allergy sweeps the once-glamorous island, reports say.

The lone star tick, an aggressive bloodsucker, has triggered a surge in “alpha-gal syndrome,” a condition that leaves victims unable to eat red meat or dairy without risking allergic reactions. Some have even gone into anaphylactic shock.

Hundreds of residents have already been affected, with 523 cases reported last year, according to The Times of London.

“Good questions can stop bad projects”

“f you want to speak out against a bad project at a public meeting, consider asking a hard question instead of stating an objection. Objections call for no immediate action except perhaps a cursory “thank you, we will think about that.”

A hard question calls for an answer there and then. It also conveys an objection, but the point is to force the officials to say something specific in reply. Of course, there are ways to duck hard questions, but then they have done that publicly for all to see.”

High pressure out of place for this time of year is causing the big wet.

‘The high is located further south than usual for this late in winter, creating a persistent onshore flow more commonly seen in NSW from late summer through to early winter – historically Sydney’s wettest time of year.

“The Battery Storage Delusion.. what 35 million tons of industrial effort buys you”

As someone who has spent most my professional life in the global energy and commodities space both as an economist and as a trader, I have grown increasingly concerned about the way grid-scale battery storage is portrayed in public discourse. If you have paid any attention to the headlines, you would have heard that battery technology is “on the verge of solving” the intermittency problem of wind and solar energy. According to this narrative, all we need to do is build more battery storage, and the path to “net zero” will unfold automatically… magically.

If only it were that simple…”

“India’s biofuel drive is saving billions but also sparking worries”
    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cvgv873y02eo

It is by Abhik Deb, BBC News, Delhi

A better BBC article then usual, with both sides of the debate at least aired.

    Some quotes from it –
“Last month, India achieved its objective of blending 20% ethanol with petrol, known as E20, five years ahead of its target.
The government views this as a game changer in reducing carbon emissions and trimming oil imports. Since 2014, ethanol blending has helped India cut 69.8 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions and saved 1.36 trillion rupees ($1.5 bn; £1.1 bn) in foreign exchange.”

So 70 million tonnes of CO2 saved, over 11 years. China burns 13,000,000 tonnes of coal a day, evey day, producing more then 47 million tonnes of CO2 a day.
So India has saved about a day and a half of China’s current CO2 emissions in 11 years by this bio-ethanol switch.
Hint – CO2 is plant food – and beneficial.

“While there is no official data on the impact of of E20 fuel on engines, consumers routinely share anecdotes about their vehicle’s deteriorating mileage on social media. Many standard insurance policies in India also don’t provide cover for damage due to the use of non-compliant fuel, a top executive at online insurance platform Policybazaar, who wanted to stay anonymous, told the BBC.”

“Ethanol is produced from crops like sugarcane and maize, and expanding its use means diverting farm produce into manufacturing more fuel.”

“Moreover, this year, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) approved an unprecedented allocation of 5.2 million tonnes of rice for ethanol production. The rice in FCI stocks is earmarked to be given to India’s poor at a subsidised rate.

“The policy could lead to an “agriculture disaster in a couple of years”, said Devinder Sharma, a farming sector expert.

“”In a country like India, where 250 million people go hungry, we cannot use food to feed the cars,” Mr Sharma said.”

So – not an absolute winner of a policy.

“Everything You Need To Know about “Lab-Grown Meat” ”

“Lab-grown meat, by contrast, is not a natural product. It isn’t meat as you or I know it. Of course, its manufacturers want you to believe it is – but they’re lying, and with good reason.

While it’s true that lab-grown meat, unlike “plant-based meat”, actually is made with real animal cells, it’s generally made with a type of animal cell – so-called “immortalised cell lines” – that human beings, and all animals in fact, have absolutely no history of consuming. Ever. In basic terms, the difference between normal animal cells and immortalised cells is that normal cells have a finite life, whereas immortalised cells, as the name suggests, just go on and on replicating, potentially forever, so long as they continue to be kept under the right conditions (the right temperature, adequate food, sufficient removal of waste products, etc.). In this respect, immortalised cells, and lab-grown meat, are functionally indistinguishable from cancer.”

The child is created on the day the program draws it, so it is days old perhaps… or the AI drew a picture of a 16-yr-old who looks 14, as many do.. or the AI spontaneously drew an under-age-looking person engaged in sex while the person asking the AI did not specify an age. Can an AI go to Court? Do AI’s have rights?

FWIW – about those radioactive prawns found in USA

“The headline is problematic; the details more-so.

The Food and Drug Administration is warning the public not to eat, sell or serve certain Great Value raw frozen shrimp sold at Walmart due to possible contamination with Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope.

The next paragraph contains enough detail to be alarming:

U.S. Customs and Border Protection alerted the FDA about possible Cesium-137, or Cs-137, detected in shipping containers at four U.S. ports, the FDA said Tuesday in a press release. Testing on frozen shrimp from the distributor, Indonesia’s BMS Foods, also tested positive, the FDA said.

Here’s the basic problem: Cs-137 has no natural source.

It is produced only one way: Inside an operating fission reactor.”

“It is produced only one way: Inside an operating fission reactor.””

Well, how else are you going to heat the water to make them grow fast?? Makes sense to me.. So, does Indonesia have people sneaking into their 3 research reactors at night and growing prawns under cover?? ..or does China grow them in their reactors and re-label them as Indonesian??

Are the Americans valuable enough to artificially feed prawns CS-137 just to poison them? I doubt it, the Americans are quite capable of killing themselves with what they eat without help…
