Just when you thought EV’s could not get more deadly
Eric Worrall alerts us to the new experimental Burning Battery Ejectors at WattsUp.
A Chinese group has invented a James Bond style ejector for EVs to solve those embarrassing moments when the battery reaches thermal runaway, and there are no handy swimming pools to park the car in.
It seems like a great idea for all the times the EV starts to smoke while you idle next to a pit of fire retardant foam. Otherwise, it seems a bit tough on pedestrians. This could not only kill school children walking down the road, but take out their bus too.
Imagine if a hostile power had remote control over 500 kilogram covert bomb launchers, and they infiltrated our cities?
In case of thermal runaway, this proposed EV battery ejection system is designed to send a flaming, venting one-tonne battery pack several meters to the right of the vehicle … and may the gods help anything in its path.

Normally the battery is tightly integrated into the structure of the EV for reasons of minimising weight and volume of the battery pack. They are not easy to remove.
Making the pack easily separable like this will mean more weight and volume but it does have the advantage of a design that could be adapted for battery swaps.
However all attempts at battery swapping have been failures.
And as pointed out this is dangerous to pedestrians.
Unfortunately the availability of this technology will be used by the Left to say the safely problems of EVs have been solved. In the silly woke countries like Australia “researchers” will get taxpayer grants to work on this idea.

Imagine that you have been involved in a MVA (vehicle crash) and you are trapped in your “Battery ejection” EV..
and… the ejection system has not deployed… So the BE could possibly be functional. But we don’t know if it is..
How do our Rescue Crews extricate the trapped occupants safely, without the possibility of having our legs scythed
off?
How do we work in a multi vehicle accident scene with one of those BE Bevs involved????

We should “just” eject the passengers. Zero zero seats have been around for decades. Not so great in underground car parks, but hey nothings perfect.

Imagine attending a crash of one of these cars and the battery has not yet been ejected.
Can you safely work on rescuing a person from that side of the vehicle or must you remain on the far side to avoid delaying the battery’s departure?
And if the battery doesn’t eject, should the car be approached or should it be left alone, cordoned off for a set period of time, a little like a chambered round of ammunition that fails to discharge when the trigger is pulled. Maybe you just point the car in a safe direction and wait for 30 minutes or until the battery ejects, incinerates or goes cold?

Your garage is hooked up yet another over-priced box of electronics called a V2G unit that allows the grid to suck your battery dry any time it is connected. Currently under trial in Melb-

If you cut a slot in the garage wall beside your car it will eject the burning battery outside, where it will set fire to your V2G unit!

TdeF, all modern EV battery swap schemes have failed. The most notable one was probably Better Place in Israel in 2007-2013, a start-up that lost US$850 million on the project. If it could work anywhere it could work there. Because of the small size of the country only 37 battery swap stations were needed. Plus the people are highly technologically literate and willing to accept new technologies. But it still failed.
With much larger countries you need an infeasibly large number of battery swap stations and compatible cars.
Nevertheless, there was successful EV battery swapping in the United States from 1910 to 1924 by the by Hartford Electric Light Company, with the GeVeCo battery swapping service.

I am always going over the inventions of WWII, inventions German and Japanese scientists and engineers thought impossible or low priority. And how they changed the war.
Time on target. Microwave centimeter radar, the British Cavity Magnetron which changed everything for submarines, aircraft, night fighting, airborne radar. I just wish some of the $20Trillion a year trying to control the gas CO2 was spent on fusion energy. Still the drive of Elon Musk has created the world’s first total telephone and internet network without wiring. We could have saved a fortune on the NBN. If you leave all the money to politicians, they spend on themselves and their friends, like China and the UN.

Let us visit the Melbourne suburb of Box Hill, the one that flew the Chinese flag on a public Council building to satisfy its large Chinese population. The public Box Hill hospital is quite large and it employs many staff whose valued status earns them both a company vehicle and a dedicated parking spot beneath the main building, complete with personal EV plug-in charging port.
A few months ago I drove down to this lower level because the usual top level was chokkers. There, to my surprise, I saw some 10 to 12 new white Chinese made SUVs, all in a neat line at reserved parking by their charge ports. Impressive expenditure on vital medical care, I thought.
Today, after reading this battery ejector article, my mental image of this row of new white matching SUVs strayed to “what if?” territory.
What if there were newer models bought, ones with the ejector battery. If one at the end DID eject its burning battery, straight into the one next to it, could there be a spectacular chain reaction, kachong, kachong,kachong a dozen times until it ended with possible damage to an innocent citizen’s car beside the last SUV?
Then I thought “unintended consequences” as the 9 storey hospital building burned down, a local suburb version of 9/11. Geoff S

I would’ve thought it’d be the most dangerous place in every suburb in every city.
Just think about the toxic disaster when hundreds of batteries are ignited and little chance of removal and clean up for many hours and days.

Very ingenious. It’s always good to see innovative and thoroughly thought through solutions arriving in the EV marketplace. Logically we will soon see a version for the much bigger ICE segment with tank ejectors or maybe foam dispensors seeing those fires can be extinguished. The future is bright.

Sounds like a variation on the failed EV battery exchange theme. There was a start-up electric car battery exchange business back in 2008, A Better Place.
Former Victorian, Brumby Labor government, internet millionaire, wunderkind Evan Thornley resigned from parliament back in 2008 to go to A Better Place, a company offering EV battery switching services. The company was billed as a leader in the emerging electric car transformation. But the much heralded Better Place new dawn turned sour when Thornley, then Better Place CEO, was fired in 2013 not long before economic reality set in and the company went broke.

Yes, and they can say they are closing some, but it’s a lie. They are updating them with later, much more efficient plants. We are the only ones blowing them up and making sure no one can use coal again. In Victoria the Labor/Green government has even changed the Constitution to make sure we cannot extract gas or use uranium or thorium or fracking unless a new goverment has 60% control and can remove these abominations.

That almost got me into trouble when I first mentioned it back in 2008.
I started what I do back in March of 2008, when I was asked to contribute at a U.S. blog site. I had no idea on how to go about that, but the site’s owner said it was just a blog site, and that anybody could write anything. So I thought ….. something about power generation. Kevin07 had just signed us up to the Kyoto Protocol at Bali, to reduce CO2 emissions, (and the big emphasis was on coal fired power) so I wanted to explain how difficult that would be when it came to closing down coal fired power plants, and trying to, umm, replace them with renewables of choice.
I had to submit my Posts via email, every third day or so, and he would Post them at the site. After a Month or so of this, and now thinking I was going to ‘keep at it’ (and I suppose to save him the work) he gave me the ability to Log into the site and write the Posts straight to the site. I was certain the whole thing would ‘tap out’ after a dozen or so Posts, but that original series that started me out (my Kyoto Series) went to more than fifty separate Posts, and then, thinking that was it for me, what I found was that I was only scratching the surface.
For my third Post, I had started to get ‘into it’, but you can still see that when it comes to writing, I’m still a bog standard amateur.
I emailed the Posts to Ed, he read it, and immediately emailed me back asking about the last paragraph where I mentioned China opening up between one and two new coal fired plants every week, and would be doing so for many years to come. He was dumbfounded and asked me if it was actually true, or perhaps I was embellishing it a bit. I emailed him back with the link to the article where I read it. He emailed back saying ….. let’s just leave it at one a week.
When I saw the Post up at the site the next morning, I saw that he had actually put that paragraph in bold.
He emailed me me and told me all his friends who read the blog were astounded and that no one actually believed it.
I also mentioned that perhaps China might be doing this for ten to fifteen years.
That Post was written 17 years ago, and China is still bringing them on line at that rate. Those plants are two and three levels of technology higher than existing plants here in Australia, and they have even perfected how to refit those older large plants with the newer USC technology.

The only reason we are considering EVs today is because of their so called dangerous CC and therefore we must try and change the climate back to the earlier 20th century.
The data obviously proves the extremists are wrong and just look at the big improvement after 1950 where deaths from extreme weather, floods , droughts etc are compared from 1900 to 1960.
Very few people before 1960 compared to today and another 5.2 billion more people at risk in 2024.
It seems that the more atmospheric co2 we have the safer and longer life expectancy we now enjoy today.
Just look at the flatlining graph after 2000.
And this only takes a few minutes online and definitely no reason to WASTE TRILLIONs of $ on toxic, unreliable W & S.
